SUMMARY:MEPN April Forum - Anti-Zionism is Not Antisemitism: Examining the History of Jewish Opposition to Zionism
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 27\, 2024\, 10:00am – 11:30am CT\, Click here to register\n\nRegister here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_V9xyY4yUSOytGYrViNTeZw#/registration \nOrganized by Middle East Peace Now. Please email mepn@mepn.org with any questions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn recent years\, there has been an effort to redefine “antisemitism” to include not only bigotry toward Jews and Judaism\, but also criticism of Israel and Zionism. In May 2022\, Jonathan Greenblatt of the Anti-Defamation League declared that “Anti-Zionism is antisemitism.” Some Israelis admit that equating anti-Zionism with antisemitism is a tactic to silence criticism of Israel. Zionism believes that Israel is the “homeland” of all Jews and that Jews living elsewhere are “in exile.” The overwhelming majority of Jewish Americans reject this view. The group whose publications I edit\, the American Council for Judaism\, was established in 1942 to keep alive the idea that Judaism is a religion of universal values\, not a nationality. My talk will examine the way Zionism has had a negative impact upon both Judaism and American foreign policy. \nAllan C. Brownfeld is a nationally syndicated columnist and is editor of ISSUES\, the quarterly journal of the American Council for Judaism (www.acjna.org). He received his A.B. from the College of William and Mary\, his M.A. from the University of Maryland\, and his J.D. from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law of the College of William and Mary. He has taught on the faculties of St. Stephen’s School and the University of Maryland. The author of five books\, he has served on the staff of the U.S. Senate\, House of Representatives and the Office of the Vice President.

SUMMARY:Earth Day - From Little Earth to Palestine: Rally & March
DESCRIPTION:EARTH DAY RALLY AND MARCH\, 4/21: From Little Earth to Palestine! 📣🇵🇸 Fight back against environmental racism! Divest MN from apartheid Israel! Shut down Smith Foundry! No greenwashing genocide! More info below 👇 \n🗓️Sunday April 21st\n⏰1:00PM\n📍Smith Foundry (28th and Longfellow Ave\, MPLS) \nHOW ISRAEL USES GREENWASHING: \nGreenwashing: the act of framing one’s actions or policies as environmentally friendly — “green” — as a means of concealing some other harm. \nGreenwashing is a tactic used by settler colonies that attempts to deceivingly characterize the genocidal and intrinsically capitalistic annexations of land by occupation forces as “environmentally progressive”. \nIsrael’s exploitation of Palestinian land and resources has locked Palestine into a captive market\, effectively creating an economic relationship rooted in manufactured dependence and cyclical debt. \nThis is especially prevalent in the energy sector in Palestine where Gazans have two sources of electricity: the frequently bombed Gaza Power Plant which depends on fuel—a resource that Israel has substantially restricted access to due to its “dual purpose” categorization—and the Israel Electric Corporation (IEC). \nIsraeli green energy corporations like SolarEdge build solar fields on stolen and illegally occupied Palestinian land to sell to the IEC. Palestinians are forced to depend on Israel for access to their own resources and the global West is deceived into believing that renewable energy sources are being developed from a place of ethical benevolence. \nThe systemic dispossession and exploitation of Palestinian land with resources deemed profitable for the occupation’s endeavors contributes to the de-development of Palestine—worsening conditions for Palestinians and making it increasingly difficult for Palestinians to achieve sovereignty under Israel’s apartheid regime. \nInitiated by Climate Justice Committee and Anti-War Committee. Endorsed by the Free Palestine Coalition\, EPNI\, WAMM\, and others.

SUMMARY:Tell Walz to Shut Down Smith Foundry
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, April 11\, 2024\, 5:30 pm\, Eastcliff\, 176 N Mississippi River Blvd \, St Paul\, MN \nRally and Press Conference at the governor’s residence \nSmith has been polluting East Philips for decades. It’s blatant environmental racism: foundries would never be allowed in affluent white neighborhoods. Walz could put his weight behind shutting down Smith at any time through bills like HF 4231 + SF 4316 that would kill the grandfathered permits for polluters like Smith & St Paul Brass\, but he believes avoiding controversy in an election year is more important than the health of our communities. SUMMARY:In Support of Palestinian Liberation Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, March 29\, 2024\, 3:00 – 5:00 PM\, Room 125 in Wiley Hall\, 225 S 19th Ave\, Minneapolis\, MN 55455 \nUMN Educators for Justice in Palestine (EJP) in collaboration with the National Lawyers Guild and the MN Free Palestine Coalition has organized a lecture by the Palestinian-Amnerican attorney and human rights activist\, Huwaida Arraf. \n  \nAn internationally-known activist\, Huwaida has been involved in a number of legal and grassroots initiatives for Palestinian rights in the past two decades. In 2001\, she co-founded the International Solidarity Movement (ISM)\, a Palestinian-led non-violent resistance movement\, which has twice been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. From 2007-2008\, Huwaida helped build the first accredited clinical legal education program in the Arab world\, based at Al-Quds University. She was one of the initiators and organizers of the first delegation of lawyers to enter Gaza following Operation Cast Lead (2008-2009)\, and co-authored the report on their findings\, “Onslaught: Israel’s Attack on Gaza and the Rule of Law.” Huwaida is the former Chairperson of the Free Gaza Movement\, and from August to December 2008\, led 5 successful sea voyages to the Gaza Strip to confront and challenge Israel’s illegal blockade on the 2 million Palestinians living there. She was one of the primary organizers of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla and was traveling with it when it was lethally attacked by Israeli forces on 31 May 2010.  In 2011\, she was one of the six Palestinian Freedom Riders\, who\, inspired by the U.S. Civil Rights Movement’s Freedom Rides of the 1960s\, attempted to ride segregated Israeli settler public transport\, for which they were harassed then violently arrested. \nHuwaida is currently based in Michigan where she practices civil rights law and continues to devote much of her time to activism on Palestine and other human rights and social justice issues. She is the co-chair of the National Lawyers Guild Palestine Subcommittee\, and sits on a number of organizational boards\, including New Generation for Palestine\, Eyewitness Palestine and  the Advisory Board of the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights. In 2020 she served as a Bernie Sanders delegate to the Democratic National Convention.

SUMMARY:Twin Cities Gaza Ceasefire Pilgrimage
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 23\, 2024\, 6:00 AM – 8:00 PM\, Starting point at Brooklyn Park River Park \nThis Lent\, a global movement is walking in prayerful solidarity with the people of Gaza.\nOn Saturday\, March 23rd\, come walk\, pray\, and sing with us as we journey along the Mississippi.\nView the full event page here: https://www.peacecatalyst.org/gcpilgrimage\n—————\nWant to walk with us? Register here: https://forms.gle/N6jM4GJa281DRuFr5\nWant to volunteer? Sign up here: https://forms.gle/pTfbHhAxFSLKGkhj7\nDoes your church or organization want to sponsor? Sign up here: https://forms.gle/DREX9aSC5N3y75SJ9\n————–\nThe Pilgrimage Route:\nMap of route from Brooklyn Park River Park to Savage Nature Center near Bdote: https://maps.app.goo.gl/VgbagWAdHUBR3z627\nThe Twin Cities Gaza Ceasefire Pilgrimage will begin at sunrise at Brooklyn Park River Park and head south along the Mississippi River. Our prayerful\, nonviolent walk will follow paved\, accessible paths along River Road\, making stops at Kroening Nature Center\, Boom Island Park\, Minnehaha Falls\, and churches along the route. At times the route will cross over the Mississippi\, staying near the river as a reminder of the Gazan coast.\nThe pilgrimage will end near Bdote\, the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers. This site is not only sacred to the Dakota people as the location of the Dakota creation story; it is also a site of historic trauma\, where many Dakota were interned and died in a concentration camp following the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. The sacred Indigenous sites along the route are a reminder that our pilgrimage takes place against a backdrop of violent settler colonialism perpetrated by European Americans in the United States. As we journey in solidarity with Gaza\, we also recommit ourselves to the work of healing justice with the Indigenous people of Mni Sota Makoce.\nThe full Twin Cities pilgrimage route approximates the mere 22 miles from Gaza City in the north of Gaza\, to Rafah in the south. Hundreds of thousands of Gazan civilians were forced to navigate this distance last fall\, fleeing violence and following Israel’s false promise of safety from bombardment and combat. Our pilgrimage will take the full day until sunset to allow time for breaks\, prayer and song\, meals\, and the inclusion of people of all abilities and ages.\nThis route brings home the geography of the horror taking place in Gaza\, where only the distance between Brooklyn Park and Fort Snelling encompasses the entire geographic area of Gaza. In a single day\, our pilgrimage and our bodies will map the reality that no place within Gaza is safe for the 2 million displaced civilians surviving without shelter from aggression and deprivation for the past 140+ days.\n———\nSchedule (subject to change):\n– 6am — Gather\n– 6:30am-7am — Sunrise Service at Brooklyn Park River Park\n– 7am-9am — Brooklyn Park River Park to Carl W. Kroening Nature Center (4.7 miles)\n– 9:30am-11:30am — Kroening Nature Center to Boom Island Park (4.2 miles)\n– 11:45am-1:30pm — Boom Island Park to Faith Mennonite Church (4 miles)\n– 1:30pm-2:30pm — Singing and Lunch for Pilgrims at Faith Mennonite Church\n– 2:30pm-3:30pm — Faith Mennonite Church to 176 N Mississippi River Blvd\, St. Paul (2.1 miles)\n– 3:30pm-3:45pm — Activity at 176 N Mississippi River Blvd\n– 3:45pm-5:15pm — 176 N Mississippi River Blvd to Minnehaha Falls (3.3 miles)\n– 5:45pm-7pm — Minnehaha Falls to Thomas C. Savage Visitor Center\, Ft. Snelling (2.7 miles)\n– 7pm-8pm — Closing Ceremony and Food — Thomas C. Savage Visitor Center\, Ft. Snelling\nJoin us for the whole journey\, a section of the journey\, or at stops along the way!\n———————\nWhat do we want:\n1. Enduring and Sustained Ceasefire.\n2. Immediate flow of life saving food\, water\, aid\, fuel and humanitarian assistance.\n3. Release of all hostages – both the Israeli hostages held by Hamas – and the Palestinian hostages held in the Israeli prison system.\n4. SUMMARY:Voices from the Holy Land Online Film Salon: "Israeli Apartheid in Action: Water Control"
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, March 17\, 2024\, 2:00 pm\, Online\, Click here to register \nControlling the supply\, distribution\, and cost of water to an occupied people is apartheid in action. Israel\, through legal and illegal means\, maintains near-complete control over the region’s freshwater aquifers\, severely restricting Palestinians’ abilities to drill wells\, install pumps\, build water tanks\, or even collect rainwater. The average Israeli consumes over 3 times the water used by each Palestinian on the water grid in the West Bank (9 times the water used by those off the grid). West Bank Palestinians pay 1/3 or more of their income to Israeli companies for drinking water. Meanwhile\, Gazans are now consuming less than 3 liters per day—hardly enough for survival. \nVFHL offers three short videos describing the “hydropolitics” and structural water apartheid in the Holy Land. Our panel discussion will explore designed inequalities in water distribution; the physical\, economic and regulatory controls; as well as the ecological problems of pollution and over-extraction. \nRegister below and join us on March 17 at 2:00 PM Central for a discussion of the water crisis throughout Palestine\, with: \n– Nancy Murray – Co-founder of Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine \n– Mazin Qumsiyeh – Director of the Palestine Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability \n– Eyal Hareuveni – Author of “Parched: Israel’s Policy of Water Deprivation in the West Bank” \nOur moderator will be Jeff Halper\, Israeli-American anthropologist\, author\, lecturer\, and political activist; founder of Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD) and a co-founder of The One Democratic State Campaign (ODSC)(invited). \nNOTE: After you register\, you will immediately get an Approved response – BUT then look in your email for an email From: Zoom with the word “Confirmation” at the end of the subject line…there you’ll find the link and password to watch the film in advance of the Salon event.
