SUMMARY:Wednesday Vigil to End War
DESCRIPTION:The Vigil to End War is sponsored by the WAMM End War Committee (EWC). \nThe EWC is dedicated to ending U.S. involvement in war\, the threats of war\, and the production\, sale and use of the weapons of war. \nPlease wear a mask and maintain social distance! \nEvery Wednesday at the the Lake Street/Marshall Avenue Bridge \n4:00 pm – 5:00 pm between November 1st and March 31st\n5:00 pm – 6:00 pm between April 1st and October 31st \nSigns provided or bring your own. Check the WAMM calendar and Facebook events pages for special themes for the day! \nSponsored by the End War Committee \nIn 1999\, WAMM’s End War Committee partnered with other local activist groups to initiate a weekly vigil on the Lake Street and Marshal Avenue bridge in St.Paul. Originally in response to the U.S. and NATO bombings in Yugoslavia\, the vigil has continued weekly with different U.S. sanctions\, interventions\, and wars to protest. Every Wednesday for over 20 years—rain\, shine or below zero temps—activists in the Twin Cities have gathered to stand in solidarity with all those affected by U.S. militarism and to call for peace.

SUMMARY:Truth Killers: The Corporate Media and the Military-Industrial Complex
DESCRIPTION:Truth Killers: The Corporate Media and the Military-Industrial Complex \nThursday\, December 1st at 7:00pm Central Time (8:00pm Eastern Time) \nOnline Event via Zoom \nThe first casualty of war\, and militarism\, is the truth. And the corporate mainstream media works diligently hand-in-glove with the US military-industrial complex to make this happen. Through its unquestioning repetition of government propaganda\, its lies of omission\, and its ratings-hungry war mongering\, the media have become an essential part of the information war so endemic to US imperialism. \nThis webinar will describe this deadly relationship and how it has evolved to the point where virtually no dissent\, no call for peace\, no real understanding of declared adversaries is allowed. From Operation Mockingbird to CIA Director William Casey’s famous quote (“We’ll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false”)\, the control of the US public’s perceptions of its government’s role in the world has been long in the making. \nNow that we are on the brink of nuclear armageddon as a result of the US/NATO pursuit of continuous war against Russia and soon\, it appears\, with China\, it has never been more important to see through the lies fed to us from the corporate media. This webinar is a step in that direction. \nBill Astore is a retired lieutenant colonel (USAF) and professor of history. He has written for TomDispatch.com\, Truthout\, History News Network (HNN)\, Alternet\, Salon\, Antiwar.com\, and Huffington Post among other sites.  He has authored or co-authored three books and numerous articles focusing on military history as well as the history of science\, technology\, and religion.  He earned a BS (with distinction) in mechanical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute\, an MA from the Johns Hopkins University (history of science and technology)\, and a D.Phil. (doctor of philosophy) from the University of Oxford (modern history). \nDavid Swanson is an author\, activist\, journalist\, and radio host. He is executive director of World BEYOND War and campaign coordinator for RootsAction.org. Swanson’s books include War Is A Lie and When the World Outlawed War. He blogs at DavidSwanson.org and WarIsACrime.org. He hosts Talk World Radio. He is a Nobel Peace Prize Nominee. \nSwanson was awarded the 2018 Peace Prize by the U.S. Peace Memorial Foundation. He was also awarded a Beacon of Peace Award by the Eisenhower Chapter of Veterans For Peace in 2011\, and the Dorothy Eldridge Peacemaker Award by New Jersey Peace Action in 2022. Find David at MSNBC\, C-Span\, Democracy Now\, The Guardian\, Counter Punch\, Common Dreams\, Truthout\, Daily Progress\, Amazon.com\, TomDispatch\, The Hook\, etc. \nEvent organized by Massachusetts Peace Action. \nClick this link to register. \n

SUMMARY:Human Rights Day Protest
DESCRIPTION:International Human Rights Day! \nSaturday\, December 10th 2022 at 1:00 PM \n3101 S Bryant Ave\, Minneapolis 55408 \n1pm: Meet at Bryant Square Park with Uptown march to follow. \nThe U.S. uses the language of human rights to justify U.S. intervention in Ukraine and to impose sanctions on Iran\, Venezuela\, and Cuba.\n\nMeanwhile\, the U.S. government continuously refuses to act in support of the basic human rights to education\, healthcare\, housing\, and a live-able planet for our children here at home.\n\nAfter the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade\, people in the U.S. are also fighting for women’s and reproductive rights.\n\nLastly\, people of color are targeted by police and killed at an outrageous rate in their own communities.\n\nThis comes on top of longstanding U.S. wars and interventions\, which NEVER bring human rights. Instead\, they brutally subject the peoples of the world to occupation and instability while stealing their natural resources and suppressing their rights to self-determination.\n\nWe see it in Palestine\, where the U.S. encourages illegal annexations for Israeli settlers and funds the ongoing war on Palestinians.\n\nJoin with us to demand respect for human rights at home and abroad!\nInitiated by the Anti-War Committee. Co-sponsored by Women Against Military Madness.\n#InternationalHumanRightsDay

DESCRIPTION:Raise Hell: The Life & Times of Molly Ivins\nSunday\, January 8\, 2023 at 1 pm – 3 pm\n4200 Cedar Ave in Minneapolis \nRaise Hell: The Life & Times of Molly Ivins tells the story of media fire-brand Molly Ivins\, six feet of Texas trouble who took on the Good Old Boy corruption wherever she found it. Meet us at South High School in Minneapolis or WATCH LIVE on Facebook.\nThis month\, we’re focusing on the continuation of Cuba on the list of nations that the U.S. designates as “terrorist.”\nMore than 10\,000 people and 100 progressive advocacy groups have signed an open letter urging President Joe Biden to reverse the Trump administration’s terrorism designation for Cuba and to reinstate Obama-era policy for the island.\nThe international outcry against the U.S. intentional starvation blockade of Cuba is growing. These actions powerfully refute the U.S. claim that Marco Rubio\, Bob Menendez and Ted Cruz anti-Cuba campaign represents us.\nNow in their third year\, the public bike and car caravans that started in Miami and led by Cuban-Americans have broken up that myth. Watch this video produced by Cuban-Americans in Miami for the September 25 caravans (in Spanish with English subtitles).———————————Car caravan details:\nSouth High School parking lot\, 3131 19th Ave So\, Minneapolis12:30: Volunteer car marshal training1:00: Line up and add signs and flags to cars at South High School parking lot\, 3131 19th Ave So\, Minneapolis. SUMMARY:Show Your Love for Venezuela!
DESCRIPTION:Show Your Love for Venezuela!\nFriday\, Feb 10th from 7-9 pm\n4200 Cedar Ave. S\, Minneapolis\n\nThe Anti-War Committee is sending 2 committee members on a delegation to Venezuela in March to learn about the effects of US sanctions first hand. Trump’s Muslim ban (which included Venezuela) made it difficult for Venezuelans to come here and US sanctions have made the situation very difficult for Venezuelans during a global pandemic. Sending folks from MN is an important act of solidarity and will bring back needed information! Help us send them to Venezuela on the upcoming Alliance for Global Justice delegation.\n\nThere will also be a silent auction so you can bid on a Valentines Day gift basket.\n\nDonations can be tax deductible and can be made out to the Anti-War Education Fund with Venezuela in the memo or made online.

SUMMARY:Coffee Hour: Take Cuba off the US "State Sponsors of Terrorism" list
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 11\,  2023 10:00-11:30 am\n4200 Cedar Avenue South in Minneapolis\n\nJoin us in person for coffee and bagels or tune into Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89551204797\n\nIn the opinion of the US Department of State\, Cuba is a “terrorist state.” It is part of a list of a few countries determined by the United States to receive that designation. This list is used as a way to punish countries that the US is in conflict with. At the coffee hour we will focus on the list and its impact on Cuba. This list has damaged the people of Cuba and similarly affected other countries on the list.\n\nWe are pleased to have as our primary speaker David Ramírez Álvarez\, Second Secretary of the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in Washington\, D.C. who will speak about the impact of the list on Cubans and their economy.\n\nWe will also have brief talks about how the US State Sponsors of Terrorism list impacts people in other countries on the list. We are delighted to be joined by Sima Shakhsari\, co-founder of the No Sanctions on Iran Coalition and Chair and Director of Graduate Studies at the Department of Gender\, Women and Sexuality Studies at the University of Minnesota\, and Wyatt Miller\, a member of the Anti-War Committee who recently traveled to Syria with the Syria Solidarity Movement and Arab-Americans 4 Syria.\n\nWe will encourage participants to take action to remove Cuba from the US State Sponsors of Terrorism list and provide them with tools to take action.\n\nSponsors: Solidarity Committee on the Americas (SCOTA)\, Minnesota Cuba Committee\, Witness for Peace Solidarity Collective\, Veterans for Peace\, Chapter 27\, Twin Cities CPUSA\, Minnesota Peace Action Coalition.

SUMMARY:Call-in days - messages for President Biden and Senators Klobuchar and Smith
DESCRIPTION:FEB 13 AT 8 AM – FEB 15 AT 6 PM \nA VALENTINE TO CUBA -MINNESOTA LOVES CUBA:\nPART OF THE CAMPAIGN TO TAKE CUBA OFF THE US STATE SPONSORS OF TERRORISM LIST.\\n\n\nCall-in days from Feb. 13-15 – messages for President Biden and Senators Klobuchar and Smith\nWe will provide phone numbers and scripts closer to the dates of the call in days. You can find this information on this Facebook post.\nBackground information:\n\nSCOTA is committed to support Cuba building a peaceful and prosperous future. We oppose intervention in Cuba by the United States. One way to support a brighter future for Cuba is to take action against Cuba being on the US State Sponsors of Terrorism list.\n\nNine days before leaving office\, Trump designated Cuba a State Sponsor of Terrorism. Two years later\, Biden has kept Cuba on the terrorism blacklist. Ironically\, Cuba has been a victim of U.S.-based terrorism — not a sponsor of terrorism. There is no credible evidence to support the designation\, which is aimed to devastate Cuba’s economy by cutting it off from international credit and investment.by being on the list\, the resulting sanctions and international restrictions limit Cuba’s ability to purchase medicines for its population and to reboot its economy after the COVID pandemic. The Cuban people are the ones who suffer from these restrictions.\nPresident Biden can unilaterally remove Cuba from the United States list of state sponsors of terrorism by an executive order. We can urge Senators Klobuchar and Smith and our congressional delegation to advocate with President Biden to remove Cuba from the list. Most importantly we must demand that President Biden remove Cuba from this list.\n\nPlease join SCOTA campaign to take Cuba off the list and support the Cuban people. Our campaign will take place in February to show the love of Minnesotans for the Cuban people.

SUMMARY:Valentine's Message to Klobuchar: Take Cuba off the U.S. Terror List Now!
DESCRIPTION:TUESDAY\, FEBRUARY 14\, 2023 AT 4 PM – 5 PM \nCelebrate Valentine’s Day!\nJoin us by taking Valentine’s messages to\nSenator Klobuchar’s office:\n\n\nTime: 4:00 PM\nTake Cuba off the U.S. State Sponsor of Terror List NOW!\n>GATHER AT the bridge on Washington Avenue over 35W near Senator Klobuchar’s office beginning at 4:00 p.m.\n>HOLD Banners and signs\n>March to front of Senator Klobuchar’s office for a demonstration\n>Deliver Valentine’s letter to Senator Klobuchar urging her to stand up for Cuba and call on President Biden to remove Cuba from the list\n—————————–\nThe United States has determined that Cuba is a part of a list of few countries that are designated as State Sponsors of Terrorism. The list is used as a way for the US to punish countries that we are in conflict with.\nCuba was put on the list by Trump without providing any reasonable justification for doing this. This designation has harmed the people of Cuba by international financial restrictions that prevent it from rebooting its economy especially after the pandemic.\nBiden has continued this policy\, but he can remove Cuba from the list by an Executive Order.\n—————————–\nMINNESOTA LOVES CUBA:\nCAMPAIGN TO REMOVE CUBA FROM THE LIST OF US STATE SPONSORS OF TERRORISM\nPlease watch SCOTA Facebook page for more information on Minnesota Loves Cuba events:\nhttps://www.facebook.com/solidaritycommitteeontheamericas\nSponsors: Solidarity Committee on the Americas (SCOTA)\, Minnesota Cuba Committee\, Witness for Peace Solidarity Collective\, Veterans for Peace\, Chapter 27\, Twin Cities CPUSA\, Minnesota Peace Action Coalition\, Women Against Military Madness (WAMM).

SUMMARY:Neoliberal Apartheid And Imperial Policing With Andy Clarno
DESCRIPTION:SATURDAY\, FEBRUARY 25\, 2023 AT 10 AM – 11:30 AM\nOnline Event\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/…/reg…/WN_Q46038RMTUiSLbI5CuwRrg\n\nAs apartheid becomes a popular framework for analyzing Palestine/Israel today\, a look at the limits of liberation in “post-apartheid” South Africa challenges us rethink the definition of what apartheid is and when it ends. Against the dominant definition of apartheid\, the radical wing of the South African liberation movement offered an alternative understanding of apartheid as a system of racial capitalism. Rethinking apartheid with this lens helps us understand extreme inequality\, racialized poverty\, and militarized policing in South Africa\, Palestine/Israel\, and the United States today. Because neoliberal apartheid regimes are highly unstable social formations\, policing becomes ever more essential to the maintenance of social order. Professor Clarno analyzes the policing in Johannesburg\, Jerusalem\, and Chicago by tracing the circulation of knowledge and technology through networks of private and state security forces that coordinate to protect the powerful by policing the racialized poor.\n\nAndy Clarno is associate professor of Sociology and Black Studies and coordinator of the Policing in Chicago Research Group at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is the author of Neoliberal Apartheid: Palestine/Israel and South Africa after 1994 (University of Chicago Press 2017).\nPlease direct questions about this event to mepn@mepn.org.\n\nThank you to our forum sponsors\, Northfielders for Justice in Palestine and Israel
