SUMMARY:Coffee Hour: Rising Hope in Ecuador
DESCRIPTION:Coffee Hour: Rising Hope in Ecuador \nSaturday\, April 8\, 10:00-11:30 AM\n4200 Cedar Ave S\, Minneapolis\, MN 55407 \nJoin us in person at 4200 Cedar Ave\, Minneapolis\, MN. If you’re able to come to the coffee hour in person\, coffee\, bagels and donuts will be served.\nIf you can’t make it in person\, join us on this Facebook page or on Zoom:https://us02web.zoom.us/…/tZwudeCupz4uG9xkYUTl3…\n———————————\nIn order to help us understand more about Ecuador\, SCOTA is honored to be joined by two speakers from Ecuador who will share their perspectives:\nJonathan Nack is the contact for Ecuador’s solidarity work for the Democratic Socialists of America’s International Committee. He has resided in Ecuador for the past 4.5 years and has followed Ecuador’s politics closely for about 25 years. Joining with Jonathon will be Blair Goodman\, also from Ecuador.\nThis is a time of change in Ecuador and there is a rising hope for a more progressive government. The current President of Ecuador Guillermo Lasso is right wing. The party of former President Rafael Correa\, who was progressive and brought positive change to Ecuador\, has been a leader with other opposition parties for the impeachment of Lasso.\nIn recent elections\, Correa’s party won major municipal and regional victories including mayors of large cities. Lasso’s eight constitutional amendments were also defeated in this election. Lasso is opposed by indigenous movements because of his oil drilling and other policies opposed by these movements.\nOrganizer: Solidarity Committee on the Americas (SCOTA)\nA committee of Women Against Military Madness (WAMM)\n——————————–\nBio of Jonathan Nack:\nHe is the contact for Ecuador’s solidarity work for the Democratic Socialists of America’s International Committee. He is the second-generation socialist with 40 years of activist experience. He has substantial experience in solidarity work regarding Latin America\, going back to solidarity involving Cuba\, Nicaragua\, and El Salvador in the late 1970s\, and Venezuela since 1999. His activism covered a broad range of issues before he retired and moved to Ecuador. He has resided in Ecuador for the past 4.5 years and has followed Ecuador’s politics closely for about 25 years. Before joining DSA in 2016\, he was a founding member of the Committees of Correspondence for Democracy & Socialism in 1993. While living in Oakland\, CA\, he was a leader of the Oakland/Berkeley chapter for many years. He has also sporadically done left journalism for several left publications over the years.

The matchless shape-shifter Peter Sellars plays three wildly different roles…. Finding improbable hilarity in nearly every unimaginable scenario\, Dr. Strangelove is a subversive masterpiece that officially announced Kubrick as an unparalleled stylist and pitch-black ironist.\n\nDirected by Stanley Kubrick\nColumbia Pictures (US/UK) 1964 94 mins\nMasks and social distancing by choice\n\nConnecting the dots … discussion\nAlways FREE and open to. the public\nALL ARE WELCOME! SUMMARY:Bridge Vigil Focus: Take Cuba Off the Terrorist List
DESCRIPTION:Bridge Vigil Focus: Take Cuba Off the Terrorist List\nWednesday\, April 12\, 2023\, 5:00-6:00 pm\n\nLake Street-Marshall Bridge\n\n• Cuba is NOT threat to the U.S. national security:\n• Cuba poses no military threat to the United States. Cuba has never invaded another county\, nor has it been involved in any acts of terrorism against the United States. In fact\, Cuba has been an important mediator in resolving conflicts in the region (negotiating conflicts in Colombia).\n• Cuba continues to make international commitments to combat terrorism\, has ratified numerous international counterterrorism conventions\, and has signed a bilateral agreement with the United States on counterterrorism. Cuba has collaborated with the U.S. counter-drug traffic efforts\, interdicting narcotic shipments in the Caribbean\, and the United States Government publicly thanked Cuba for this cooperation. Cuba is a sponsor of the Colombian peace talks\, and the Cuban government is playing a constructive mediating role in these talks to end one of the region’s longest-standing conflicts.\n• Keeping Cuba on the SSOT list\, has led to greater suffering the Cuban people.\n• Banks\, financial institutions\, and international vendors ceased helping facilitate both regular trade and cooperation with faith groups seeking to provide humanitarian and development support to Cuba. As a result\, Cuba faces shortages of necessary items\, including a lack of access to clean water\, sanitation\, and hygiene articles\, and materials essential for public health\, such as medicines and medical devices.\n• Keeping Cuba on the State Sponsors of Terrorism list undermines the Biden administration’s stated foreign policy goals.\n\nSIGNS AND BANNERS WILL BE PROVIDED OR BRING YOUR OWN.\n\nSponsored by: Solidarity Committee Of The Americas\, MN Cuba Committee and Witness for Peace\nThe weekly vigil is sponsored by the WAMM End War Committee. Starting in 1999\, every Wednesday activists in the Twin Cities have gathered to stand in solidarity with all those affected by US militarism and to call for peace.

SUMMARY:Venezuela delegation report back
DESCRIPTION:Venezuela delegation report back \nMonday\, April 17\, 2023\, 7:00 pm\nMayday Books\, 301 Cedar Ave\, Minneapolis 55454 \nLIVESTREAM: Facebook\nHear from our special speakers\, Drake Myers and Andrew Josefchak from the Anti-War Committee (Twin Cities). They will be sharing their perspectives from their recent delegation to Venezuela!\n\nVenezuela has been in the cross-hairs of US imperialism for decades\, including harsh and severe sanctions and six coup attempts. The US has even outrageously kidnapped Venezuelan diplomat Alex Saab in Cape Verde. He is now held in a Miami jail for the “crime” of importing food past the US blockade. Nonetheless\, Venezuela has made great gains in making life better for the people as they build their Bolivarian revolution.\n\nSponsored by: Solidarity Committee on the Americas committee of Women Against Military Madness

SUMMARY:Mandela: U.S. Nakbar Tour
DESCRIPTION:Mandela Nakbar Tour Comes to Minneapolis\nTuesday\, May 16\, 2023\, 7:00 PM\nCowles Auditorium\, Humphrey School of Public Affairs in Minneapolis\nU of M West Bank Campus\n301 S 19th Ave\, Minneapolis\, MN 55455 \n2023 marks the 75th anniversary of the Nakba (“Catastrophe” in English)\, when over 750\,000 Palestinians were banished from their homes upon the formation of the settler-colonial state of Israel. Today\, there are close to five million Palestinian refugees who continue to demand their Right to Return to the homes and lands from which they were exiled.\n\nTo commemorate the Nakba\, the U.S. Palestinian Community Network (USPCN) and the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (NAARPR) have arranged a brief U.S. Nakba Day 75 tour\, to take place from May 15th – May 20th\, featuring Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela\, elected member of the South African National Assembly representing the African National Congress – and grandson of the late Nelson Mandela – as the tour’s keynote speaker.\n\nMr. Mandela\, also the tribal chief of the Mvezo Traditional Council\, holds a degree and a post-graduate diploma in Political Science and International Studies from Rhodes University. Unabashed in his support for the Palestinian people\, just like his grandfather\, he speaks regularly about Palestinian liberation at conferences\, rallies\, and other events across the world.\n\nMandela\, whose family fought against South African apartheid\, is coming to Minneapolis to speak out against Israeli apartheid and for the rights of Palestinians. The Anti-War Committee and the Twin Cities Coalition for Justice for Jamar are hosting this event to also draw attention to the cooperation between US police forces\, including the Minneapolis Police Force\, and the Israeli Defense Forces.\n\nInitiated by the Anti-War Committee and Twin Cities Coalition for Justice for Jamar. Co-sponsored by Council on American Islamic Relations\, Jewish Voice for Peace -TC\, MN BDS Community\, MN Immigrant Rights Action Committee\, Northfielders for Justice in Palestine\, Students for a Democratic Society @ the U of MN\, Veterans for Peace Chapter 27 and Women Against Military Madness.

DESCRIPTION:Iraq Today: since 1991 – 32 years of war\, sanctions and occupation\nWednesday\, May 17\, 2023 at 6:30 pm – 9 pm\nSt. Albert the Great Catholic Church\n3216 E 29th St\, Minneapolis\, MN\, 55406 \nSami Rasouli\, a naturalized American citizen\, has returned to Minnesota after 18 years in his native Iraq. A few years after Shock and Awe destroyed Iraq’s infrastructure and the U.S. began invading and occupying Iraq\, Sami left Minneapolis and his successful restaurant business and returned to the city of Najaf to act as a people-to-people bridge of peace between his two countries. In Iraq\, he founded the Muslim Peacekeeper Team\, and an Arabic-English language institute. He brought medical and academic professionals\, civic and business leaders to the U.S.\, and invited interested Americans to Iraq. He embarked on many speaking tours throughout the U.S. to inform people about conditions in Iraq.\nHe continues to be a bridge with his eyewitness accounts of what happens to a country after U.S. bombing\, invasion\, and occupation.

SUMMARY:Support the 33rd Cuba Friendshipment Caravan
DESCRIPTION:Support the 33rd Cuba Friendshipment Caravan\nThursday\, May 18\, 2023\, 7-9 pm\nCalvary Church 2608 Blaisdell Ave. in Minneapolis 55408 \nSince 1992\, IFCO/Pastors for Peace has organized 31 Friendshipment Caravans to Cuba as challenges to the US government’s economic blockade. These caravans have taken valuable humanitarian aid to Cuba but more importantly have helped demonstrate to the Cuban people that they are not alone and that they have allies even in the ‘belly of the beast’ in the US.\n\nFriendshipment Caravans have also played an important role in making dents in the blockade. We successfully resisted the Bush administration’s attempts to fully criminalize travel to Cuba\, and our work was part of the backdrop to the Obama administration’s partial normalization of relations with Cuba. Now we are actively resisting the re-tightening of the blockade by Trump\, which the Biden administration has so far continued.\n\nThis event is co-sponsored with the Solidarity Committee on the Americas.\n\nFFI: 612-827-5364

DESCRIPTION:Al Nakba March\nSaturday\, May 20\, 2023 at 2 pm\nBryant Square Park\, 3101 Bryant Ave S\, Minneapolis 55408 \nFor Palestinians\, May 15 marks Al-Nakba\, Arabic for ‘the catastrophe’. During the 1948 war\, at least 750\,000 Palestinians were ruthlessly attacked\, massacred\, and driven from their homes by Zionist terror groups\, and have never been allowed to return\, in violation of international law. 2023 marks 75 years of Israeli land theft\, occupation\, and apartheid.\n\nThe US has provided over $150 billion in aid to Israel since 1949. Our tax dollars are paying for the occupation of Palestine.\nWe are not talking about Al-Nakba as a historic event but one that is ongoing. We need to raise our voices and march to denounce the Israeli attacks on the Al-Aqsa Mosque – where worshipers were violently attacked with rubber-coated bullets\, tear gas\, and stun grenades during Ramadan – as well as the bombing attacks on Gaza and the ethnic cleansing of the West Bank and Jerusalem.\nJoin us for our annual Al-Nakba protest to demand:\n-End U.S. aid to Israel\n-The state of MN must divest its over $800 million in state pension funds from Israeli companies and bonds\n-Speaking out for Palestine is not a crime!\n\n\nActivists from MN will attend the national protest in DC on May 13 so we will have our local action the next weekend on May 20.\nOrganized by the Anti-War Committee & American Muslims for Palestine – MN.\nEndorsements (so far):\nCouncil on American-Islamic Relations – MN\nJewish Voice for Peace – Twin Cities\nMiddle East Peace Now\nMN BDS Community\nMN Workers United\nNorthfielders for Justice in Palestine\nStudents for Justice in Palestine – UMN\nThe Red Nation\nTwin Cities Coalition for Justice 4 Jamar\nWomen Against Military Madness\n\n

In memorium. \nWalk Against War And The Weapons Of War \nWhat truly constitutes national security? Certainly not endless war or accelerating military buildup. The military budget was $223.43 billion in 1983\, $440.53 billion in 2003\, and is $858 billion in 2023. The U.S. has already spent $113 billion and has made a commitment to an additional $3.075 billion in “security” assistance to Ukraine. The world is suffering greatly\, both environmentally and economically\, from the continuation of the U.S./NATO war in Ukraine. Atmospheric levels of all three main greenhouse gases reached record highs in 2022. The war has disrupted energy markets\, driven a return to coal when use is at an all-time high\, prompted an increase in emissions-intensive arms production and use\, and become an excuse for governments to delay climate action. To protect people and ecosystems from further environmental damage\, we must stop military buildup that can only lead to environmental and human destruction. The legacy of escalating war is death\, havoc\, and environmental calamity. WAMM has repeatedly called for major cuts in the military budget and an end to endless war. However\, the budget continues to grow by leaps and bounds. This bloated budget is unconscionable given the serious problems facing our country and the world. Americans struggle to pay for food\, housing\, and health care. Climate disasters are affecting the entire globe. Let’s put a stop to this madness! \nFFI: 612-827-5364\ngeneral@wamm.me
