SUMMARY:Show Your Love for Venezuela!
DESCRIPTION:Show Your Love for Venezuela!\nFriday\, Feb 10th from 7-9 pm\n4200 Cedar Ave. S\, Minneapolis\n\nThe Anti-War Committee is sending 2 committee members on a delegation to Venezuela in March to learn about the effects of US sanctions first hand. Trump’s Muslim ban (which included Venezuela) made it difficult for Venezuelans to come here and US sanctions have made the situation very difficult for Venezuelans during a global pandemic. Sending folks from MN is an important act of solidarity and will bring back needed information! Help us send them to Venezuela on the upcoming Alliance for Global Justice delegation.\n\nThere will also be a silent auction so you can bid on a Valentines Day gift basket.\n\nDonations can be tax deductible and can be made out to the Anti-War Education Fund with Venezuela in the memo or made online.

SUMMARY:Coffee Hour: Take Cuba off the US "State Sponsors of Terrorism" list
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 11\,  2023 10:00-11:30 am\n4200 Cedar Avenue South in Minneapolis\n\nJoin us in person for coffee and bagels or tune into Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89551204797\n\nIn the opinion of the US Department of State\, Cuba is a “terrorist state.” It is part of a list of a few countries determined by the United States to receive that designation. This list is used as a way to punish countries that the US is in conflict with. At the coffee hour we will focus on the list and its impact on Cuba. This list has damaged the people of Cuba and similarly affected other countries on the list.\n\nWe are pleased to have as our primary speaker David Ramírez Álvarez\, Second Secretary of the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in Washington\, D.C. who will speak about the impact of the list on Cubans and their economy.\n\nWe will also have brief talks about how the US State Sponsors of Terrorism list impacts people in other countries on the list. We are delighted to be joined by Sima Shakhsari\, co-founder of the No Sanctions on Iran Coalition and Chair and Director of Graduate Studies at the Department of Gender\, Women and Sexuality Studies at the University of Minnesota\, and Wyatt Miller\, a member of the Anti-War Committee who recently traveled to Syria with the Syria Solidarity Movement and Arab-Americans 4 Syria.\n\nWe will encourage participants to take action to remove Cuba from the US State Sponsors of Terrorism list and provide them with tools to take action.\n\nSponsors: Solidarity Committee on the Americas (SCOTA)\, Minnesota Cuba Committee\, Witness for Peace Solidarity Collective\, Veterans for Peace\, Chapter 27\, Twin Cities CPUSA\, Minnesota Peace Action Coalition.

SUMMARY:Call-in days - messages for President Biden and Senators Klobuchar and Smith
DESCRIPTION:FEB 13 AT 8 AM – FEB 15 AT 6 PM \nA VALENTINE TO CUBA -MINNESOTA LOVES CUBA:\nPART OF THE CAMPAIGN TO TAKE CUBA OFF THE US STATE SPONSORS OF TERRORISM LIST.\\n\n\nCall-in days from Feb. 13-15 – messages for President Biden and Senators Klobuchar and Smith\nWe will provide phone numbers and scripts closer to the dates of the call in days. You can find this information on this Facebook post.\nBackground information:\n\nSCOTA is committed to support Cuba building a peaceful and prosperous future. We oppose intervention in Cuba by the United States. One way to support a brighter future for Cuba is to take action against Cuba being on the US State Sponsors of Terrorism list.\n\nNine days before leaving office\, Trump designated Cuba a State Sponsor of Terrorism. Two years later\, Biden has kept Cuba on the terrorism blacklist. Ironically\, Cuba has been a victim of U.S.-based terrorism — not a sponsor of terrorism. There is no credible evidence to support the designation\, which is aimed to devastate Cuba’s economy by cutting it off from international credit and investment.by being on the list\, the resulting sanctions and international restrictions limit Cuba’s ability to purchase medicines for its population and to reboot its economy after the COVID pandemic. The Cuban people are the ones who suffer from these restrictions.\nPresident Biden can unilaterally remove Cuba from the United States list of state sponsors of terrorism by an executive order. We can urge Senators Klobuchar and Smith and our congressional delegation to advocate with President Biden to remove Cuba from the list. Most importantly we must demand that President Biden remove Cuba from this list.\n\nPlease join SCOTA campaign to take Cuba off the list and support the Cuban people. Our campaign will take place in February to show the love of Minnesotans for the Cuban people.

SUMMARY:Valentine's Message to Klobuchar: Take Cuba off the U.S. Terror List Now!
DESCRIPTION:TUESDAY\, FEBRUARY 14\, 2023 AT 4 PM – 5 PM \nCelebrate Valentine’s Day!\nJoin us by taking Valentine’s messages to\nSenator Klobuchar’s office:\n\n\nTime: 4:00 PM\nTake Cuba off the U.S. State Sponsor of Terror List NOW!\n>GATHER AT the bridge on Washington Avenue over 35W near Senator Klobuchar’s office beginning at 4:00 p.m.\n>HOLD Banners and signs\n>March to front of Senator Klobuchar’s office for a demonstration\n>Deliver Valentine’s letter to Senator Klobuchar urging her to stand up for Cuba and call on President Biden to remove Cuba from the list\n—————————–\nThe United States has determined that Cuba is a part of a list of few countries that are designated as State Sponsors of Terrorism. The list is used as a way for the US to punish countries that we are in conflict with.\nCuba was put on the list by Trump without providing any reasonable justification for doing this. This designation has harmed the people of Cuba by international financial restrictions that prevent it from rebooting its economy especially after the pandemic.\nBiden has continued this policy\, but he can remove Cuba from the list by an Executive Order.\n—————————–\nMINNESOTA LOVES CUBA:\nCAMPAIGN TO REMOVE CUBA FROM THE LIST OF US STATE SPONSORS OF TERRORISM\nPlease watch SCOTA Facebook page for more information on Minnesota Loves Cuba events:\nhttps://www.facebook.com/solidaritycommitteeontheamericas\nSponsors: Solidarity Committee on the Americas (SCOTA)\, Minnesota Cuba Committee\, Witness for Peace Solidarity Collective\, Veterans for Peace\, Chapter 27\, Twin Cities CPUSA\, Minnesota Peace Action Coalition\, Women Against Military Madness (WAMM).

SUMMARY:Neoliberal Apartheid And Imperial Policing With Andy Clarno
DESCRIPTION:SATURDAY\, FEBRUARY 25\, 2023 AT 10 AM – 11:30 AM\nOnline Event\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/…/reg…/WN_Q46038RMTUiSLbI5CuwRrg\n\nAs apartheid becomes a popular framework for analyzing Palestine/Israel today\, a look at the limits of liberation in “post-apartheid” South Africa challenges us rethink the definition of what apartheid is and when it ends. Against the dominant definition of apartheid\, the radical wing of the South African liberation movement offered an alternative understanding of apartheid as a system of racial capitalism. Rethinking apartheid with this lens helps us understand extreme inequality\, racialized poverty\, and militarized policing in South Africa\, Palestine/Israel\, and the United States today. Because neoliberal apartheid regimes are highly unstable social formations\, policing becomes ever more essential to the maintenance of social order. Professor Clarno analyzes the policing in Johannesburg\, Jerusalem\, and Chicago by tracing the circulation of knowledge and technology through networks of private and state security forces that coordinate to protect the powerful by policing the racialized poor.\n\nAndy Clarno is associate professor of Sociology and Black Studies and coordinator of the Policing in Chicago Research Group at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is the author of Neoliberal Apartheid: Palestine/Israel and South Africa after 1994 (University of Chicago Press 2017).\nPlease direct questions about this event to mepn@mepn.org.\n\nThank you to our forum sponsors\, Northfielders for Justice in Palestine and Israel

SUMMARY:February: Cuba Car Caravan
DESCRIPTION:February: Cuba Car Caravan -Take Cuba off the U.S. State Sponsored Terrorism List \nSUNDAY Feb 26 AT 1 PM – 3 PM \nWe are rounding out our “Show Love for Cuba” month with our monthly car caravan.\n-End the U.S. Blockade of Cuba\n-Take Cuba off the U.S. State Sponsors of Terrorism\nJoin SCOTA\, the Minnesota Cuba Committee and others for our monthly car caravan against the US blockade of Cuba. Meet us at South High School in Minneapolis or WATCH LIVE on this page.\nThis month we’re focusing on the continuation of Cuba on the list of nations that the U.S. designates as “terrorist.”\nMore than 10\,000 people and 100 progressive advocacy groups have signed an open letter urging President Joe Biden to reverse the Trump administration’s terrorism designation for Cuba and to reinstate Obama-era policy for the island.\nThe international outcry against the U.S. intentional starvation blockade of Cuba is growing. These actions powerfully refute the U.S. claim that Marco Rubio\, Bob Menendez and Ted Cruz anti-Cuba campaign represents us.\nNow in their third year\, the public bike and car caravans that started in Miami and led by Cuban-Americans have broken up that myth. Watch this video\, produced by Cuban-Americans in Miami for the September 25 caravans (in Spanish with English subtitles).\nhttps://youtu.be/WNkUgppYJBE\n\n\nCar caravan details:\nSouth High School parking lot\, 3131 19th Ave So\, Minneapolis\n12:30: Volunteer car marshal training\n1:00: Line up and add signs and flags to cars at South High School parking lot\, 3131 19th Ave So\, Minneapolis. Signs and car flags will be available or bring your own. Caravan sponsors will make brief remarks.\n1:30: Caravan begins – left out of the parking lot on 21st Street\, left on Lake Street\, right on First Ave. South\, left through the Post Office parking lot\, left on Blaisdell and left on Lake back to South High.\n2:30: Brief closing rally at South High parking lot.\nThe lead car will be in contact with participating cars – details will be provided at the rally site.\nContact 612-437-0222 for more information or if you’re joining late.

SUMMARY:Sign our Petition for Cuba!
DESCRIPTION:Sign our Petition to Minnesota Senators to Remove Cuba from the State Sponsors of Terrorism list \nContact Senator Amy Klobuchar and Senator Tina Smith via this petition to request they ask President Biden to remove Cuba from the U.S. State Sponsors of Terrorism list. \nAll you have to do is sign the petition!!         Deadline to sign on is March 15th! \nLink to petition:     https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/petition-minnesota-senators-to-remove-cuba-from-the-state-sponsors-of-terrorism-list?source=direct_link& \nOnce the petition is collected\, we will be emailing both Senators the list of petition signers. \nPETITION TEXT \nTo: Senator Amy Klobuchar and Senator Tina Smith \nFrom: [Your Name] \nAs a constituent that lives in Minnesota\, I’m writing to ask for your support to remove Cuba from the U.S. State Sponsors of Terrorism list (SSOT). \nCuba was put on the U.S. State Sponsor of Terrorism List in the last days of Trump’s administration as a political move to please conservative Cuba-Americans and without justification. \nThe list has had devastating consequences for the Cuban economy and has hurt the well-being of the Cuban people. Presence on the list prevents U.S. businesses from engaging with Cuba and prevents needed medicines\, construction materials\, food and medicine from arriving. Removing Cuba from this list would be easy and help to relieve the humanitarian crisis with assistance\, promote tourism and build the economy. \nWith an Executive Order\, President Biden could remove Cuba from the list. I call on you to urge the President to remove Cuba from the state sponsored terrorism list (SSOT) \nInitiated by: Solidarity Committee on the Americas (SCOTA)\, a committee of Women Against Military Madness (WAMM) \nhttps://www.facebook.com/solidaritycommitteeontheamericas \nMinnesota Loves Cuba Month: \na Campaign to remove Cuba from the list of US State Sponsors on Terrorism \n  \nThanks to Witness for Peace Solidarity Collective for Sponsoring this petition. \n

SUMMARY:Coffee Hour: Rising Hope in Ecuador
DESCRIPTION:Coffee Hour: Rising Hope in Ecuador \nSaturday\, April 8\, 10:00-11:30 AM\n4200 Cedar Ave S\, Minneapolis\, MN 55407 \nJoin us in person at 4200 Cedar Ave\, Minneapolis\, MN. If you’re able to come to the coffee hour in person\, coffee\, bagels and donuts will be served.\nIf you can’t make it in person\, join us on this Facebook page or on Zoom:https://us02web.zoom.us/…/tZwudeCupz4uG9xkYUTl3…\n———————————\nIn order to help us understand more about Ecuador\, SCOTA is honored to be joined by two speakers from Ecuador who will share their perspectives:\nJonathan Nack is the contact for Ecuador’s solidarity work for the Democratic Socialists of America’s International Committee. He has resided in Ecuador for the past 4.5 years and has followed Ecuador’s politics closely for about 25 years. Joining with Jonathon will be Blair Goodman\, also from Ecuador.\nThis is a time of change in Ecuador and there is a rising hope for a more progressive government. The current President of Ecuador Guillermo Lasso is right wing. The party of former President Rafael Correa\, who was progressive and brought positive change to Ecuador\, has been a leader with other opposition parties for the impeachment of Lasso.\nIn recent elections\, Correa’s party won major municipal and regional victories including mayors of large cities. Lasso’s eight constitutional amendments were also defeated in this election. The matchless shape-shifter Peter Sellars plays three wildly different roles…. Finding improbable hilarity in nearly every unimaginable scenario\, Dr. Strangelove is a subversive masterpiece that officially announced Kubrick as an unparalleled stylist and pitch-black ironist.\n\nDirected by Stanley Kubrick\nColumbia Pictures (US/UK) 1964 94 mins\nMasks and social distancing by choice\n\nConnecting the dots … discussion\nAlways FREE and open to. the public\nALL ARE WELCOME! SUMMARY:Bridge Vigil Focus: Take Cuba Off the Terrorist List
DESCRIPTION:Bridge Vigil Focus: Take Cuba Off the Terrorist List\nWednesday\, April 12\, 2023\, 5:00-6:00 pm\n\nLake Street-Marshall Bridge\n\n• Cuba is NOT threat to the U.S. national security:\n• Cuba poses no military threat to the United States. Cuba has never invaded another county\, nor has it been involved in any acts of terrorism against the United States. In fact\, Cuba has been an important mediator in resolving conflicts in the region (negotiating conflicts in Colombia).\n• Cuba continues to make international commitments to combat terrorism\, has ratified numerous international counterterrorism conventions\, and has signed a bilateral agreement with the United States on counterterrorism. Cuba has collaborated with the U.S. counter-drug traffic efforts\, interdicting narcotic shipments in the Caribbean\, and the United States Government publicly thanked Cuba for this cooperation. Cuba is a sponsor of the Colombian peace talks\, and the Cuban government is playing a constructive mediating role in these talks to end one of the region’s longest-standing conflicts.\n• Keeping Cuba on the SSOT list\, has led to greater suffering the Cuban people.\n• Banks\, financial institutions\, and international vendors ceased helping facilitate both regular trade and cooperation with faith groups seeking to provide humanitarian and development support to Cuba. As a result\, Cuba faces shortages of necessary items\, including a lack of access to clean water\, sanitation\, and hygiene articles\, and materials essential for public health\, such as medicines and medical devices.\n• Keeping Cuba on the State Sponsors of Terrorism list undermines the Biden administration’s stated foreign policy goals.\n\nSIGNS AND BANNERS WILL BE PROVIDED OR BRING YOUR OWN.\n\nSponsored by: Solidarity Committee Of The Americas\, MN Cuba Committee and Witness for Peace\nThe weekly vigil is sponsored by the WAMM End War Committee. Starting in 1999\, every Wednesday activists in the Twin Cities have gathered to stand in solidarity with all those affected by US militarism and to call for peace.

They will be sharing their perspectives from their recent delegation to Venezuela!\n\nVenezuela has been in the cross-hairs of US imperialism for decades\, including harsh and severe sanctions and six coup attempts. The US has even outrageously kidnapped Venezuelan diplomat Alex Saab in Cape Verde. He is now held in a Miami jail for the “crime” of importing food past the US blockade. Today\, there are close to five million Palestinian refugees who continue to demand their Right to Return to the homes and lands from which they were exiled.\n\nTo commemorate the Nakba\, the U.S. Palestinian Community Network (USPCN) and the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (NAARPR) have arranged a brief U.S. Nakba Day 75 tour\, to take place from May 15th – May 20th\, featuring Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela\, elected member of the South African National Assembly representing the African National Congress – and grandson of the late Nelson Mandela – as the tour’s keynote speaker.\n\nMr. Mandela\, also the tribal chief of the Mvezo Traditional Council\, holds a degree and a post-graduate diploma in Political Science and International Studies from Rhodes University. SUMMARY:Iraq Today
DESCRIPTION:Iraq Today: since 1991 – 32 years of war\, sanctions and occupation\nWednesday\, May 17\, 2023 at 6:30 pm – 9 pm\nSt. Albert the Great Catholic Church\n3216 E 29th St\, Minneapolis\, MN\, 55406 \nSami Rasouli\, a naturalized American citizen\, has returned to Minnesota after 18 years in his native Iraq. A few years after Shock and Awe destroyed Iraq’s infrastructure and the U.S. began invading and occupying Iraq\, Sami left Minneapolis and his successful restaurant business and returned to the city of Najaf to act as a people-to-people bridge of peace between his two countries. SUMMARY:Support the 33rd Cuba Friendshipment Caravan
DESCRIPTION:Support the 33rd Cuba Friendshipment Caravan\nThursday\, May 18\, 2023\, 7-9 pm\nCalvary Church 2608 Blaisdell Ave. in Minneapolis 55408 \nSince 1992\, IFCO/Pastors for Peace has organized 31 Friendshipment Caravans to Cuba as challenges to the US government’s economic blockade. These caravans have taken valuable humanitarian aid to Cuba but more importantly have helped demonstrate to the Cuban people that they are not alone and that they have allies even in the ‘belly of the beast’ in the US.\n\nFriendshipment Caravans have also played an important role in making dents in the blockade. We successfully resisted the Bush administration’s attempts to fully criminalize travel to Cuba\, and our work was part of the backdrop to the Obama administration’s partial normalization of relations with Cuba. Now we are actively resisting the re-tightening of the blockade by Trump\, which the Biden administration has so far continued.\n\nThis event is co-sponsored with the Solidarity Committee on the Americas.\n\nFFI: 612-827-5364

SUMMARY:Al Nakba March
DESCRIPTION:Al Nakba March\nSaturday\, May 20\, 2023 at 2 pm\nBryant Square Park\, 3101 Bryant Ave S\, Minneapolis 55408 \nFor Palestinians\, May 15 marks Al-Nakba\, Arabic for ‘the catastrophe’. During the 1948 war\, at least 750\,000 Palestinians were ruthlessly attacked\, massacred\, and driven from their homes by Zionist terror groups\, and have never been allowed to return\, in violation of international law. 2023 marks 75 years of Israeli land theft\, occupation\, and apartheid.\n\nThe US has provided over $150 billion in aid to Israel since 1949. Our tax dollars are paying for the occupation of Palestine.\nWe are not talking about Al-Nakba as a historic event but one that is ongoing. We need to raise our voices and march to denounce the Israeli attacks on the Al-Aqsa Mosque – where worshipers were violently attacked with rubber-coated bullets\, tear gas\, and stun grenades during Ramadan – as well as the bombing attacks on Gaza and the ethnic cleansing of the West Bank and Jerusalem.\nJoin us for our annual Al-Nakba protest to demand:\n-End U.S. aid to Israel\n-The state of MN must divest its over $800 million in state pension funds from Israeli companies and bonds\n-Speaking out for Palestine is not a crime!\n\n\nActivists from MN will attend the national protest in DC on May 13 so we will have our local action the next weekend on May 20.\nOrganized by the Anti-War Committee & American Muslims for Palestine – MN.\nEndorsements (so far):\nCouncil on American-Islamic Relations – MN\nJewish Voice for Peace – Twin Cities\nMiddle East Peace Now\nMN BDS Community\nMN Workers United\nNorthfielders for Justice in Palestine\nStudents for Justice in Palestine – UMN\nThe Red Nation\nTwin Cities Coalition for Justice 4 Jamar\nWomen Against Military Madness\n\n
