SUMMARY:Bosnia and “Humanitarian Intervention”: The First US/NATO War\, a talk by Michael Livingston
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, December 2\, 2023\, 3:00 pm\, May Day Books – 301 Cedar Ave South\, Minneapolis \nWhile the most recent US/NATO war is fought in Ukraine\, the brutal civil war that ripped apart Bosnia from 1992 to 1995\, ended in the first US/NATO war\, part of a larger dismemberment of Yugoslavia by the US and its key capitalist allies in Europe. NATO’s involvement was purportedly based on the need for humanitarian intervention. \nThis talk explores the background of the war in Bosnia\, and how the destruction of Yugoslavia was created by the Western powers\, the same Western powers who then justified intervention on humanitarian grounds: the need to stop the killing that they themselves had started and fueled. \nBased on the speaker’s research during a 2023 study inside Bosnia\, the talk focuses on current conditions in Bosnia\, the causes and development of the civil war\, and the destruction of the former Yugoslavia\, as well as the education system of Bosnia (the “two schools under one roof” system of segregated education)\, the language divorce (the efforts to create separate languages out of a single language)\, and the state of post-civil war society. \nSponsored by May Day Books. Endorsed by Vets for Peace Chapter 27 and Women Against Military Madness (WAMM) End War committee. \nAbout the Speaker: Michael Livingston has been active in the Peace and Antiwar Movement for over 40 years\, first becoming active in the Central American Movement of the 1980s. He is currently a professor of psychology and holds a Ph.D. in Child Psychology. FFI: email mlivingston@csbsju.edu or call 612.619.7817

Originally in response to the U.S. and NATO bombings in Yugoslavia\, the vigil has continued weekly with different U.S. sanctions\, interventions\, and wars to protest. Every Wednesday for over 20 years—rain\, shine or below zero temps—activists in the Twin Cities have gathered to stand in solidarity with all those affected by U.S. militarism and to call for peace.

SUMMARY:Current Crisis in Palestine/Israel: Education for Understanding and Peace
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, December 9\, 2023\, 10:00 am\, Online event\, click here to register \nInitiated by Middle East Peace Now\, Sponsored by WAMM \nMariam El-Khatib is passionate about educating people on the current crisis in Palestine. She will begin her presentation with a brief review of Palestinian history. That will be followed by a look at the ongoing crisis specifically in the West Bank and Gaza\, both before and after October 7th. Her talk will vividly depict what is happening up to the present time\, with short videos. \nGiven her passion for education to inform and inspire action she will share a number of ways people have been activated to educate others in their spheres. Mariam will conclude with ways that audience members can be ‘educators’ in their spheres of influence to affect positive change. \nAbout the Speaker: Mariam El-Khatib is a Palestinian-American who was born and raised in Minnesota. She is passionate about inspiring and empowering others to mobilize and work towards Palestinian liberation. Mariam draws from her own family’s experience of living under Israeli occupation and witnessing the challenges that her family and community face under Israeli occupation. \nShe is currently a volunteer member of the Minnesota chapter of American Muslims for Palestine (AMP)\, having previously served as the lead person in AMP. Mariam graduated from the University of Minnesota. While there\, she was an active member of Students for Justice in Palestine at the University of Minnesota and part of the team that led the divestment efforts in 2016. She is an excellent and sought after speaker\, having recently spoken to a large Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) audience. SUMMARY:The Occupation of the American Mind Film
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, December 11\, 2023 at 7:00 pm\, 4200 Cedar Ave S\, Mpls\, MN \nThe Occupation of the American Mind: Israel’s ongoing military occupation of Palestinian territory and repeated invasions of the Gaza strip have triggered a fierce backlash against Israel’s policies virtually everywhere in the world – except the United States…. The film explores this critical exception and reveals how the Israeli and US governments along with the pro-Israel lobby have joined forces\, often with differing motives\, to shape American media coverage of the conflict in Israel’s favor….The film provides an analysis of Israel’s decades long battle for the hearts\, minds and tax dollars of the American people. \nDirectors: Loretta Alper\, Jeremy Earp | United States \nAbridged version | 2016 | 49 minutes \nSponsored by the WAMM Movie Committee

SUMMARY:Vigil to End War
DESCRIPTION:The Vigil to End War is sponsored by the WAMM End War Committee (EWC). \nThe EWC is dedicated to ending U.S. involvement in war\, the threats of war\, and the production\, sale and use of the weapons of war. \nPlease wear a mask and maintain social distance! \nEvery Wednesday at the the Lake Street/Marshall Avenue Bridge \n4:00 pm – 5:00 pm \nSigns provided or bring your own. Check the WAMM calendar and Facebook events pages for special themes for the day! \nSponsored by the End War Committee \nIn 1999\, WAMM’s End War Committee partnered with other local activist groups to initiate a weekly vigil on the Lake Street and Marshal Avenue bridge in St.Paul.

SUMMARY:Bannering: Take Cuba off the U. S. State Sponsors of Terrorism List!
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, December 14\, 2023\, 3:30 pm\, corner of Lake St and Chicago Ave\, Mpls \nLocation on the corner of Lake Street and Chicago Avenue\, Minneapolis.Date and Time: Thursday\, December 14th starting 3:30 pm\nEvent initiated by: Solidarity Committee on the Americas and the MN Cuba Committee\n\n\nJoin the Solidarity Committee on the Americas and the MN Cuba Committee with signs and banners to:\nRemove Cuba from the listof the US State Sponsors of Terrorism\nMore than 10\,000 people and 100 progressive advocacy groups have signed an open letter urging President Joe Biden to reverse the Trump administration’s terrorism designation for Cuba and to reinstate Obama-era policy for the island.\nWe are committed to supporting Cuba building a peaceful and prosperous future. We oppose intervention in Cuba by the United States. One way to support a brighter future for Cuba is for us to take action against Cuba being on the US State Sponsor of Terrorism list.\nNine days before leaving office\, Trump designated Cuba a State Sponsor of Terrorism. Since 2021\, Biden has kept Cuba on the terrorism list. Ironically\, Cuba has been a victim of U.S. — based terrorism — not a sponsor of terrorism. There is no credible evidence to support the designation\, which is aimed to devastate Cuba’s economy by cutting it off from international credit and investment. By being on the list\, the resulting sanctions and international restrictions limit Cuba’s ability to purchase medicines for its population and to reboot its economy after the COVID pandemic. The Cuban people are the ones who suffer from these restrictions.\nPresident Biden can unilaterally remove Cuba from the United States list of state sponsors of terrorism by an executive order.\n\nCUBA OFF U.S. TERRORISM LIST!\nEND THE BLOCKADE OF CUBA
