In early September the Golden Rule sailboat wSill begin “The Great Loop,” a 10,000 mile voyage around the U.S. to call attention to the ongoing dangers of nuclear war and militarism.
This historic journey begins in the Minneapolis/St.Paul area and a number of activities are scheduled, including an event at the Lake Street/Marshall peace bridge with the Twin Cities Nonviolent campaign on September 21st, and at WAMM on September 23rd. Check the WAMM online calendar closer to these events for details, as well as the VFP Chapter 27 Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/VeteransForPeaceChapter27Minneapolis) or the Golden Rule website for other meetings and activities (http://www.vfpgoldenruleproject.org/). Some events will include an opportunity to tour the boat in person.
The Golden Rule originally set sail In 1958, intending to sail to the Marshall Islands to protest atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons. The voyage was stopped in Hawaii and the crew arrested. The boat fell into disrepair and eventually sank. Veterans for Peace was able to restore the boat and since 2005 it has been sailing the Pacific with the message of peace..
Co-sponsored by Veterans for Peace, Chapter 27 and the End War Committee of WAMM. The Golden Rule Peace Boat is a project of Veterans for Peace, an international organization with over 100 chapters made up of military veterans, military family members, and allies.
