DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 28 on Zoom  10:00am – 11:30am CT\nProfessor Amahl Bishara:\n“Against Fragmentation: Palestinian Practices\nof Connection to Confront Erasure—\nand How They Inspire Solidarity in the US Today” \nDespite closure\, economic deprivation\, and political threat\, Palestinians in a refugee camp in the West Bank have insisted on staying connected with friends\, colleagues and kin in Gaza\, and on supporting each other. Witnessing and understanding these brave practices of connectedness can inspire practices of solidarity and support in the United States today. \nAbout the Presenter:\nDr. Amahl Bishara is Professor\, Anthropology and Professor\, Studies in Race\, Colonialism\, and Diaspora at Tufts University. Her interests are media\, journalism\, the Middle East\, expressivity\, human rights\, knowledge production\, democracy\, and ethnography of place. Dr. Bishara’s research revolves around expression\, space\, media\, and settler colonialism. She is presently working on a project that examines Palestinian popular politics in a West Bank refugee camp. It examines how Palestinians in this refugee camp strive to resist three authorities: the Israeli occupation\, the Palestinian Authority administration\, and the United Nations Relief Works Agency\, through struggles over land\, water\, bodies\, and expression. \nThis Zoom webinar is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. \nWhile many of our monthly webinars are recorded\, this one will not be recorded. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:MEPN April Forum: What Now for Our Movement?
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 19\, 2025\, 10AM-11:30AM\, Zoom Webinar\, click here to register\n\n\n\nPart 1: Gaza\, Trump II\, and the great unmasking –\nan inflection point for the movement\nAs the genocidal intent of Israel’s settler colonial project has become inescapably clear\, strategies informed by the liberal Zionist desire to rescue or reform the Zionist project have been replaced by a focus on ending the genocide and to challenging the very foundations of the Zionist project. The re-election of Donald Trump portends an escalation of Israel’s project of ethnic cleansing and colonization. The ceasefire agreement for Gaza is crashing on the rocks of the realization that this “agreement” is simply a further step in putting an end to Palestinian national aspirations. Severely increased violence in the West Bank\, both structural and overt\, provides further evidence of the duplicity of any talk of Palestinian statehood or sovereignty. Indeed\, we may be approaching the end of what Rashid Khalidi has termed the “One Hundred Years’ War on Palestine.” \nWhat does this mean for our movement? Is it the time for a reset? In this forum we will take stock of the movement for Palestine in the United States and globally. What are the achievements that can be built on and what are the challenges of the present moment? Ample time will be given to sharing and discussion\, which will set the stage for Part 2 (Saturday\, May 17)\, which will consider the key roles played by the ascendancy of Christian nationalism and the weaponization of antisemitism.  Register now for this April 19 Zoom forum.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nDr. Mark Braverman is Jewish American with deep family roots in the Holy Land. Raised in a traditional Jewish family\, he was schooled in the potent combination of rabbinic Judaism and political Zionism that continues to dominate contemporary Jewish identity\, an identity that for Mark was transformed by his encounter with the Palestinian people. He is the Executive Director of Kairos USA\, a member organization of the Kairos for Justice Coalition\, a global network formed in response to the Palestinian call. Mark has lectured and trained internationally and is the author of two books\, Fatal Embrace: Christians\, Jews\, and the Search for Peace in the Holy Land and A Wall in Jerusalem: Hope\, Healing\, and the Struggle for Peace and articles and book chapters\, including the 2022 “Theology in the Shadow of the Holocaust: Revisiting Bonhoeffer and the Jews.”\n\nContact mepn@mepn.org with questions. \n  \nOrganized by Middle East Peace Now\, endorsed by WAMM Middle East Committee \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:December MEPN Forum
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, December 14\, 2024\, 10:00 – 11:30 AM\, Online\, click here to register \n\n“The Gaza Catastrophe: What Next for Palestine & Israel?” with Khaled Elgindy \nForum topic: More than a year after the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel\, Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza shows no sign of letting up\, even as the conflict has now spread to Lebanon and beyond. The war on Gaza has killed at least 43\,000 people\, forcibly displaced nearly all of Gaza’s 2.3 million inhabitants\, and reduced most of the coastal enclave to rubble\, while starvation and disease continue to spread at an alarming rate. The conflict is already the deadliest moment in Palestinian history and the most destructive episode in the century-old conflict in Israel-Palestine. Why have U.S.-backed ceasefire efforts continued to fail? What future is there for Gaza and its devastated population? What are the long-term repercussions of the current Gaza catastrophe for Israeli security\, Palestinian self-determination\, and a peaceful settlement between Palestinians and Israelis? \nAbout the speaker: Khaled Elgindy is director of the Middle East Institute’s Program on Palestine and Palestinian-Israeli Affairs and adjunct instructor in Arab Studies at Georgetown University. He is the author of the 2019 book\, Blind Spot: America and the Palestinians\, from Balfour to Trump (Brookings Institution Press). Elgindy previously served as a resident scholar in the Foreign Policy program at the Brookings Institution from 2010 through 2018. Prior to arriving at Brookings\, he served as an adviser to the Palestinian leadership in Ramallah on permanent status negotiations with Israel from 2004 to 2009\, and was a key participant in the Annapolis negotiations of 2007-08. \nPlease contact mepn@mepn.org with any questions. Organized by Middle East Peace Now\, sponsored by WAMM Middle East Committee \n\n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:November MEPN Forum
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 30\, 2024\, 10:00 – 11:30 AM\, Online\, click here to register \nNina’s Story: The Life of a Palestinian Woman\n\nAbout the speaker: Nina Cullers was born in Katamon\, West Jerusalem during the British Mandate. After the Nakba her family lived in Bethlehem. After high school Nina worked for UNRWA in Hebron\, the Dheisheh Camp outside of Bethlehem and Beit Safafa. Her work was as a teacher\, head teacher and finally as a supervisor of practice teachers. Nina then went on to earn a degree in education from Beirut Women’s College\, now American Lebanese University. Nina now resides in Virginia in the United States. She has been a board member of the Bethlehem Association of the Episcopal Church for 26 years. Additionally\, she continues advocacy work for Palestine. She recently published her memoir\, “Living Through the Nakba: Tales of a Palestinian Youth.” \nNina’s memoir\, “Living Through the Nakba: Tales of a Palestinian Youth” is just the beginning of her lifelong experiences as a Palestinian woman. Travel with her through her life in our forum.  Children and her Palestinian heritage are very important to Nina. In her memoir she says\, “Teach them (children) our tradition\, our art\, our songs\, our poetry and remind them that they came from honorable\, brave people who cared for humanity.”’ Her work with children began with teaching in UNRWA schools. After the 1949 Armistice her family came to the realization that they had no home to go to. Share this experience with Nina. Come with her to the present day as we hear her say\, “I urge all Palestinians to remember our past\, our history\, our family values and to instill these values in our children.” \nToward the end of the forum we will have a conversation with Nina about parallels between her life experiences and what is happening to Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza today. \nNOTE: A brief annual MEPN meeting will be held for a few minutes before our forum begins. It will feature a message from our president\, Janet Tollund\, along with finance and membership updates. An election for new board members will conclude the meeting. \nPlease contact mepn@mepn.org with any questions. Organized by Middle East Peace Now\, sponsored by WAMM Middle East Committee\n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:FROM GENOCIDE IN GAZA TO DECOLONIZING PALESTINE: TOWARDS A DEMOCRATIC STATE FOR ALL BETWEEN THE RIVER AND THE SEA
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, July 8\, 5:00pm New Branches\, 5011 S. 31st Ave. Minneapolis \n5:00pm–Registration and food \n6:30pm–Presentation \n  \nEven as the genocide in Gaza continues\, the US and Europe are plotting with Saudi Arabia to “normalize” Israel’s place in the region\, leaving the Palestinians trapped in the tiny enclaves of Israel’s apartheid regime forever. While our attention and hearts are focused on Gaza\, we civil society actors cannot abandon the wider fight for Palestinian rights and a better future for everyone between the River and the Sea\, now in a critical phase. \nAs a founding member of the Palestinian-led One Democratic State Campaign (ODSC)\, Jeff will present the ODSC’s program for replacing Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory with a democratic state with equal rights for all–including the returning refugees. This\, he argues\, is the only substantially just way forward\, but it is strewn with complex and difficult issues that we will discuss; there will be lots of time for discussion. \n  \nAbout Jeff Harper: \nJeff Harper is an Israeli anthropologist\, Director of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD) and a founding member of the One Democratic State Campaign program\, and has taught at universities in Israel\, the US\, Latin America\, and Africa. \nJeff has served on the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People. In 2008 he sailed into Gaza with the Free Gaza Movement to break the Israeli siege. He was nominated by the American Friends Service Committee for the Nobel Peace Prize\, together with the Palestinian intellectual and militant Hassan Andoni. \nJeff’s latest books are War Against the People: Israel\, the Palestinians and Global Pacification\, which was shortlisted for the Palestine Book Award\, and Decolonizing Israel\, Liberating Palestine: Zionism\, Settler Colonialism and the Case for One Democratic State. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:MEPN April Forum - Anti-Zionism is Not Antisemitism: Examining the History of Jewish Opposition to Zionism
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 27\, 2024\, 10:00am – 11:30am CT\, Click here to register\n\nRegister here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_V9xyY4yUSOytGYrViNTeZw#/registration \nOrganized by Middle East Peace Now. Please email mepn@mepn.org with any questions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn recent years\, there has been an effort to redefine “antisemitism” to include not only bigotry toward Jews and Judaism\, but also criticism of Israel and Zionism. In May 2022\, Jonathan Greenblatt of the Anti-Defamation League declared that “Anti-Zionism is antisemitism.” Some Israelis admit that equating anti-Zionism with antisemitism is a tactic to silence criticism of Israel. Zionism believes that Israel is the “homeland” of all Jews and that Jews living elsewhere are “in exile.” The overwhelming majority of Jewish Americans reject this view. The group whose publications I edit\, the American Council for Judaism\, was established in 1942 to keep alive the idea that Judaism is a religion of universal values\, not a nationality. My talk will examine the way Zionism has had a negative impact upon both Judaism and American foreign policy. \nAllan C. Brownfeld is a nationally syndicated columnist and is editor of ISSUES\, the quarterly journal of the American Council for Judaism (www.acjna.org). He received his A.B. from the College of William and Mary\, his M.A. from the University of Maryland\, and his J.D. from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law of the College of William and Mary. He has taught on the faculties of St. Stephen’s School and the University of Maryland. The author of five books\, he has served on the staff of the U.S. Senate\, House of Representatives and the Office of the Vice President.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Middle East Peace Now September Forum
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 16\, 2023\, 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. \nOnline event\, clink link here to register \nCo-sponsored event sponsored by Middle East Peace Now (MEPN). \nUS Policy Toward Israel At a Turning Point\, with Mitchell Plitnick\, President\, ReThinking Foreign Policy\nThe perception of Israel in the United States\, in virtually every corner except the halls of Congress\, has undergone a radical transformation in 2023. Ongoing and escalating violence by settlers\, while not new\, has reached unprecedented heights and the involvement of Israeli military and security forces in those attacks has gotten more exposure than ever before. Israel’s own radically right-wing government has escalated military attacks as well\, with the attack on Jenin in June highlighting a growing understanding that Israel is\, at best\, disregarding Palestinian lives. Yet despite Israel’s escalating violence and its de facto annexation of much of the West Bank\, mainstream congressional Democrats have doubled down on their support for Israel while the Biden administration has accelerated efforts to broker a normalization agreement between Israel and Saudi Arabia. I will discuss the implications of all of these factors and how they are connected.Mitchell Plitnick\, a political analyst and writer\, is the president of ReThinking Foreign Policy.  He is the author\, with Marc Lamont Hill\, of Except for Palestine: The Limits of Progressive Politics. Mitchell’s previous positions include vice president at the Foundation for Middle East Peace\, Director of the US Office of B’Tselem: The Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories\, and Co-Director of Jewish Voice for Peace. His writing has appeared in Ha’aretz\, the New Republic\, Mondoweiss\, Responsible Statecraft\, The New Arab\, Middle East Report\, LobeLog\, the San Francisco Chronicle\, +972 Magazine\, and other outlets. He has spoken all over the country on Middle East politics and has regularly offered commentary in a wide range of radio and television outlets including PBS News Hour\, the O’Reilly Factor\, i24 (Israel)\, Pacifica Radio\, CNBC Asia and others. Plitnick graduated with honors from UC Berkeley in Middle Eastern Studies and wrote his thesis on Israeli and Jewish historiography. He earned his Masters Degree from the University of Maryland\, College Park’s School of Public Policy.
