SUMMARY:Bitter Cane Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 11\, 2025\, 12 – 3 PM\, Phoenix Theater\, 2605 Hennepin Ave\, Minneapolis\, MN\nSTUDY THE HAITIAN STRUGGLE FOR LIBERATIONJoin us in viewing the award-winning documentary Bitter Cane\, a 1983 film about the exploitation and foreign domination of the Haitian people.\nOctober 1th\, 12-3 PM\nThe Phoenix Theatre\, 2605 Hennepin Avenue\, Minneapolis\nRegister: https://tinyurl.com/4ukmbfy5\nTo better understand the current situation in Haiti\, it’s important to look back on its history. US occupation\, foreign intervention and the exploitation of local workers by western capitalism are not unfamiliar in Haiti. For the past century\, outside forces have continuously disrupted Haiti’s sovereignty and attempted to undermine the self-determination of its people.Bitter Cane was produced and filmed secretly by a collective of Haitian and American filmmakers—many of whom were articulated with the Mouvement Haïtien de Libération (Haitian Liberation Movement) during the dictatorship of Jean-Claude Duvalier. \nAlthough filmed over 40 years ago\, the highlighted themes and struggles explored in Bitter Cane are heartbreakingly relevant today—to Haitians\, Haitians in diaspora\, and Haitian workers of the world demanding sovereignty\, fair wages\, equal rights\, and a release from the grip of imperialism\, racism\, and exploitation. \nSnacks provided and available for purchase\nDiscussion and Q+A to follow!\n\n\n	Related

We need to normalize relations with our neighboring country.\n>>>>Join us to deliver petitions to Senator Klobuchar’s office.<<<<\nThe United States under Trump put Cuba on a list of few countries that are designated as State Sponsors of Terrorism. This was after the Obama administration took Cuba off the list because it did not meet the criteria and was an impediment to diplomatic normalization.\nThe list is used as a way for the US to punish countries that it is in conflict with. Cuba was put on the list by Trump without providing any reasonable justification for doing this.\nThis designation has harmed the people of Cuba by international financial restrictions that prevent it from rebooting its economy especially after the pandemic\, Biden has continued this policy\, but he can remove Cuba from the list by a stroke of his pen via an Executive Order.\nInitiated by: Solidarity Committee on the Americas (SCOTA)\, Minnesota Cuba Committee\, Witness for Peace Solidarity Collective \n\n\n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:August Cuba Car Caravan Against the U.S. Blockade of Cuba
DESCRIPTION:August Cuba Car Caravan Against the U.S. Blockade of Cuba/Caravana Contra el Bloqueo\n\nSunday\, August 8th 2022 at 1:00-3:00pm\nSouth High School Parking Lot: 3131 19th Ave S.\, Minneapolis\n\nJoin us at the South High parking lot or watch the live stream on this page.\nSolidarity Committee on the Americas (SCOTA)\, the Minnesota Cuba Committee and other sponsors are convening monthly car caravans to protest the U.S. blockade of Cuba.\n\n12:30: Volunteer car marshal training\n1:00: Line up and add signs and flags to cars at South High School parking lot\, 3131 19th Ave So\, Minneapolis. Contact 612-437-0222 for more information or if you’re joining late.\n\nWhy a Caravan?\n\nFor 60 years (the anniversary was February 3)\, Cuba has endured the economic\, financial and commercial blockade imposed by the U.S. government. Every year this blockade is rejected by a near unanimous vote in the United Nations.\nDuring Trump’s term\, he imposed more than 220 measures to further harm the island’s economy and the Cuban people. President Biden has continued these repressive policies against Cuba and added even more sanctions. The blockade has caused great economic hardship in Cuba\, blocks food imports to Cuba and damages Cuba’s health care.\n\nDemand the U.S. government lift all its economic and political sanctions and end the blockade against Cuba.\n\nTell Biden and Congress:\n-No Delay\, Lift the U.S. blockade NOW!\n-U.S. stop sanctioning Cuban families!\n-End all travel bans on Cuba!\n#UnblockCuba2022\n#LetCubaLive\n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Interested in Visiting Cuba? Find Out About Our MN Delegation Nov. 5-12
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, August 3rd 2022 online via Zoom and live streamed to Facebook from 7:00-8:30pm. \nInterested in visiting Cuba? Find out about our MN Delegation November 5-12th. \nThe Solidarity Committee on the Americas (SCOTA) is organizing a delegation to Cuba.\nIt will be open to Minnesotans as well as people from other locations.\nWe know that some of our potential travelers have never been to Cuba and have questions about how it all works\, from the nuts and bolts of passports and currency to how you can learn a lot\, and support the Cuban people while complying with U.S. regulations.\n\nSix members of SCOTA traveled to Cuba last February and we are organizing Zoom meetings to share information about our trip and to answer questions about what you can expect. Our trip was organized by Proximity Cuba as is the November one.\n\nPlease visit their website to reserve your space or to register\, and to get more detailed information.\n\nFor a downloadable flyer\, see this page. To register for this event coming up on August 3rd\, please click here.\n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:July Car Caravan Against the U.S. Blockade of Cuba
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, July 31\, 2022 at 1:00 pm\nCar Caravan Against the Blockade of Cuba\nGather at South High Parking Lot\, 3131 19th Ave So in Minneapolis\n\n\nCONFIRMING DETAILS BUT SAVE THE DATE!\nCARAVAN IS BACK!!!!\nJoin us at the South High parking lot or watch the live stream on this Facebook.\n\n\nSCOTA\, the Minnesota Cuba Committee and other sponsors are convening monthly car caravans to protest the U.S. blockade of Cuba.\n\n\n1:00: Line up and add signs and flags to cars at South High School parking lot\, 3131 19th Ave So\, Minneapolis. Signs and car flags will be available or bring your own. Caravan sponsors will make brief remarks.\n\n\n1:30: Caravan begins – left out of parking lot on 21st Street\, left on Lake Street\, right on First Ave. South\, left through Post Office parking lot\, left on Blaisdell and left on Lake back to South High.\n\n\n2:30: Brief closing rally at South HIgh parking lot.\n\n\nThe lead car will be in contact with participating cars – details will be provided at the rally site. Contact 612-437-0222 for more information or if you’re joining late.\nWhy a caravan?\nFor 60 years (the anniversary was February 3)\, Cuba has endured the economic\, financial and commercial blockade imposed by the U.S. government. Every year this blockade is rejected by a near unanimous vote in the United Nations.\nDuring Trump’s term\, he imposed more than 220 measures to further harm the island’s economy and the Cuban people. President Biden has continued these repressive policies against Cuba and added even more sanctions. The blockade has caused great economic hardship in Cuba\, blocks food imports to Cuba\, and damages Cuba’s health care.\nDemand the U.S. government lift all its economic and political sanctions and end the blockade against Cuba.\nTell Biden and Congress:\n-No Delay\, Lift the U.S. blockade NOW!\n-U.S. stop sanctioning Cuban families!\n-End all travel bans on Cuba!\n#UnblockCuba2022\n#LetCubaLive\n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Coffee Hour: Report Back from Colombian Elections
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 16\, 2022 from 10 am to 12 Noon\nOnline Event\n\nThe Solidarity Committee on the Americas will be hosting our July Coffee Hour on the historic victory of Gustavo Petro and Francia Marquez in the presidential elections in Colombia last month. This will be the first time in modern Colombian history that a leftist will assume the presidency in a country known for its brutal repression against all forms of left and popular movements. The election of Francia Marquez — an Afro-Colombian land defender — as Vice President represents the first time a black Colombian will hold the position.\nLive streamed on Facebook. Zoom link here:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/…/tZUocOippzsqHdCGyBiqNhbQOIZGe…\nIn order to help us understand more about what this means for Colombia\, for the growing efforts towards regional integration\, and to hear more about events on the day of the election\, SCOTA is honored to be joined by two speakers\, both who will bring unique perspectives on this historic event:\nJames Patrick Jordan:\nJames has lived in Tucson\, Arizona since 1983\, where he has a long history of grassroots organizing. His main duties at Alliance for Global Justice (AFGJ) are the facilitation of AFGJ’s labor\, ecological\, and Colombia solidarity campaigns\, and he is part of AFGJ’s teams for the prison imperialism project\, and the Respect for Democracy campaign against US interference in foreign elections.\nOfunshi Oba Koso:\nOfunshi is a Twin Cities Cuban immigrant who is currently in Colombia and served as an electoral observer in Colombia in June. He is Babelawo\, a high priest of Santeria.\nThe event will be moderated by SCOTA member and DSA Twin Ports organizer Brian Thorbjornsen.\nPlease contact solidaritycommitteeofamericas@gmail.com with any questions.\n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Vigil for the 53 immigrants of San Antonio/Vigilia para los 53 inmigrantes de San Antonio
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, July 5\, 2022 at 3:30 pm\nCorner of State Avenue and Caesar Chavez Street in St Paul\n\n\nSCOTA and others are joining on Tuesday\, July 5th\, 2022 at 3:30 pm CST for a vigil for the 53 immigrants that were found in the trailer deaths in San Antonio\, TX.\n\n\nWe need to be there in support. We need to be outspoken about this tragedy so it does not repeat itself! Please join and bring signs and flags.\n\n\nWe will march to the office of Sen Tina Smith seeking the repeal of Title 42 and other changes in immigration reform.\n\n\nJust days after the Melilla massacre\, one hundred migrants were discovered in San Antonio\, TX – trapped in a tractor-trailer without water or air conditioning. Over fifty have now died from this perilous journey and nearly a dozen are hospitalized. While the blame will mainly fall on human smugglers\, these incidents are a direct result of inhumane immigration policies and decades of US imperialist interventions\, particularly in South and Central American countries.\n\n“Inhumane border policies to blame for mass migrant deaths in San Antonio\, TX”\n\nLinks to news articles:\nhttps://www.sanjuandailystar.com/…/more-than-50…\nhttps://www.nytimes.com/…/06/28/us/texas-migrants-dead\n\n\n	Related

The coffee hour will feature the important case of Alex Saab\, a Venezuelan diplomat who was arrested in Cape Verde in June 2020 while he was en route to Iran for a trade deal that would help Venezuela in the amidst of the ongoing U.S. blockade. \nWhile being detained in Cape Verde\, the U.S. forced him on a plane in October 2021\, The U.S. ignored the court ruling and international law by illegally extraditing him to the U.S. in June 2021. to face trial in Miami. \nThe United States is charging him with conspiracy to launder money. His trial continues to be postponed. Venezuela has struggled to provide its people with food and other basic necessities because of the U.S. sanctions\, coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic. \nThe U.S. kidnapping of a Venezuelan diplomat shows the U.S. empire’s efforts to harass and sanction Venezuela knows no bounds.
