SUMMARY:Bosnia and “Humanitarian Intervention”: The First US/NATO War\, a talk by Michael Livingston
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, December 2\, 2023\, 3:00 pm\, May Day Books – 301 Cedar Ave South\, Minneapolis \nWhile the most recent US/NATO war is fought in Ukraine\, the brutal civil war that ripped apart Bosnia from 1992 to 1995\, ended in the first US/NATO war\, part of a larger dismemberment of Yugoslavia by the US and its key capitalist allies in Europe. NATO’s involvement was purportedly based on the need for humanitarian intervention. \nThis talk explores the background of the war in Bosnia\, and how the destruction of Yugoslavia was created by the Western powers\, the same Western powers who then justified intervention on humanitarian grounds: the need to stop the killing that they themselves had started and fueled. \nBased on the speaker’s research during a 2023 study inside Bosnia\, the talk focuses on current conditions in Bosnia\, the causes and development of the civil war\, and the destruction of the former Yugoslavia\, as well as the education system of Bosnia (the “two schools under one roof” system of segregated education)\, the language divorce (the efforts to create separate languages out of a single language)\, and the state of post-civil war society. \nSponsored by May Day Books. Endorsed by Vets for Peace Chapter 27 and Women Against Military Madness (WAMM) End War committee. \nAbout the Speaker: Michael Livingston has been active in the Peace and Antiwar Movement for over 40 years\, first becoming active in the Central American Movement of the 1980s. He is currently a professor of psychology and holds a Ph.D. in Child Psychology. FFI: email mlivingston@csbsju.edu or call 612.619.7817 \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Iraq Today
DESCRIPTION:Iraq Today: since 1991 – 32 years of war\, sanctions and occupation\nWednesday\, May 17\, 2023 at 6:30 pm – 9 pm\nSt. Albert the Great Catholic Church\n3216 E 29th St\, Minneapolis\, MN\, 55406 \nSami Rasouli\, a naturalized American citizen\, has returned to Minnesota after 18 years in his native Iraq. A few years after Shock and Awe destroyed Iraq’s infrastructure and the U.S. began invading and occupying Iraq\, Sami left Minneapolis and his successful restaurant business and returned to the city of Najaf to act as a people-to-people bridge of peace between his two countries. In Iraq\, he founded the Muslim Peacekeeper Team\, and an Arabic-English language institute. He brought medical and academic professionals\, civic and business leaders to the U.S.\, and invited interested Americans to Iraq. He embarked on many speaking tours throughout the U.S. to inform people about conditions in Iraq.\nHe continues to be a bridge with his eyewitness accounts of what happens to a country after U.S. bombing\, invasion\, and occupation.\n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Call in day: Stop US funding of war in Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Call in day on 20-year anniversary of US war on Iraq  to stop US funding of war in Ukraine \nOn the anniversary of the  horrendous\, illegal US war on Iraq\, we demand that you represent your constituents and end the funding\, sale of weapons\, and other military means that the U.S. is using to fuel the war in Ukraine and to stop interfering in negotiations for peace. \nThousands of Ukrainians and Russians have been killed\, buildings and infrastructure have been destroyed and we are teetering on the brink of World War 3 and a nuclear war! Fund our infrastructure and human needs within the U.S.\, not war on foreign countries. \nCall: \nPresident Joe Biden-Switchboard: 202-456-1414. \nSenator Amy Klobuchar  202-224-3244 \nSenator Tina Smith-202-224-5641 \nSponsored by WAMM End War Committee \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Wednesday Vigil to End War
DESCRIPTION:The Vigil to End War is sponsored by the WAMM End War Committee (EWC). \nThe EWC is dedicated to ending U.S. involvement in war\, the threats of war\, and the production\, sale and use of the weapons of war. \nPlease wear a mask and maintain social distance! \nEvery Wednesday at the the Lake Street/Marshall Avenue Bridge \n4:00 pm – 5:00 pm between November 1st and March 31st\n5:00 pm – 6:00 pm between April 1st and October 31st \nSigns provided or bring your own. Check the WAMM calendar and Facebook events pages for special themes for the day! \nSponsored by the End War Committee \nIn 1999\, WAMM’s End War Committee partnered with other local activist groups to initiate a weekly vigil on the Lake Street and Marshal Avenue bridge in St.Paul. Originally in response to the U.S. and NATO bombings in Yugoslavia\, the vigil has continued weekly with different U.S. sanctions\, interventions\, and wars to protest. Every Wednesday for over 20 years—rain\, shine or below zero temps—activists in the Twin Cities have gathered to stand in solidarity with all those affected by U.S. militarism and to call for peace. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:End War Vigil Honoring Marie Braun
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, July 15\, 5:00-6:00 PM\nGather at 5:30 pm on the MINNEAPOLIS side\n(there is road construction on the St. Paul side)\nLake Street – Marshall Avenue bridge spanning the Mississippi River \nMarie Braun of Women Against Military Madness was instrumental in starting the weekly vigil on the Lake Street/Marshall Avenue Bridge\, which has persisted as a constant peace presence for 23 years\, beginning with the US/NATO bombing of Yugoslavia. For many years Marie and John created the original signs for the vigilers to hold. The practice continues as people crossing the bridge in cars\, trucks and buses\, on bicycles and on foot are informed or reminded of the vast human costs of US wars\, sanctions and military occupations. \nToday’s vigil will be a chance to honor and remember Marie\, who passed away on June 27 at the age of 87. Please join us at our weekly vigil to share memories and call for a more peaceful world. \n  \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:From Minneapolis to Palestine: Solidarity Against State Terror
DESCRIPTION:Across the world\, repression is worsening but the movement is growing. Palestinians are resisting Israel’s efforts to push them out of their homes in Sheikh Jarrah. In Minneapolis\, people are rising up against the recent execution of Amir Locke and anti-Black racism. \nJoin the Anti-War Committee\, Students for Justice in Palestine\, Twin Cities Coalition for Justice 4 Jamar\, Women Against Military Madness and Students for a Democratic Society for a panel on the multinational resistance from Minneapolis to Palestine\, during Israeli Apartheid Week. \nSpeakers will address how repression in Palestine and US cities like Minneapolis is connected by the tactics and technology Israel develops and exports to American law enforcement. But the resistance crosses borders too. Palestinians in the diaspora stand with Black victims of police violence. We are likewise seeing a global movement to free Palestine grow and gain legitimacy. \nCome to show your solidarity with Palestine and support community control of the police to stop killer cops! \nCo-sponsored by Students for Justice in Palestine – UMN\, Students for a Democratic Society. \n\n\n	Related
