SUMMARY:MEPN April Forum - Anti-Zionism is Not Antisemitism: Examining the History of Jewish Opposition to Zionism
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 27\, 2024\, 10:00am – 11:30am CT\, Click here to register\n\nRegister here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_V9xyY4yUSOytGYrViNTeZw#/registration \nOrganized by Middle East Peace Now. Please email mepn@mepn.org with any questions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn recent years\, there has been an effort to redefine “antisemitism” to include not only bigotry toward Jews and Judaism\, but also criticism of Israel and Zionism. In May 2022\, Jonathan Greenblatt of the Anti-Defamation League declared that “Anti-Zionism is antisemitism.” Some Israelis admit that equating anti-Zionism with antisemitism is a tactic to silence criticism of Israel. Zionism believes that Israel is the “homeland” of all Jews and that Jews living elsewhere are “in exile.” The overwhelming majority of Jewish Americans reject this view. The group whose publications I edit\, the American Council for Judaism\, was established in 1942 to keep alive the idea that Judaism is a religion of universal values\, not a nationality. My talk will examine the way Zionism has had a negative impact upon both Judaism and American foreign policy. \nAllan C. Brownfeld is a nationally syndicated columnist and is editor of ISSUES\, the quarterly journal of the American Council for Judaism (www.acjna.org). He received his A.B. from the College of William and Mary\, his M.A. from the University of Maryland\, and his J.D. from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law of the College of William and Mary. He has taught on the faculties of St. Stephen’s School and the University of Maryland. The author of five books\, he has served on the staff of the U.S. Senate\, House of Representatives and the Office of the Vice President.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Voices from the Holy Land Online Film Salon: "Israeli Apartheid in Action: Water Control"
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, March 17\, 2024\, 2:00 pm\, Online\, Click here to register \nControlling the supply\, distribution\, and cost of water to an occupied people is apartheid in action. Israel\, through legal and illegal means\, maintains near-complete control over the region’s freshwater aquifers\, severely restricting Palestinians’ abilities to drill wells\, install pumps\, build water tanks\, or even collect rainwater. The average Israeli consumes over 3 times the water used by each Palestinian on the water grid in the West Bank (9 times the water used by those off the grid). West Bank Palestinians pay 1/3 or more of their income to Israeli companies for drinking water. Meanwhile\, Gazans are now consuming less than 3 liters per day—hardly enough for survival. \nVFHL offers three short videos describing the “hydropolitics” and structural water apartheid in the Holy Land. Our panel discussion will explore designed inequalities in water distribution; the physical\, economic and regulatory controls; as well as the ecological problems of pollution and over-extraction. \nRegister below and join us on March 17 at 2:00 PM Central for a discussion of the water crisis throughout Palestine\, with: \n– Nancy Murray – Co-founder of Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine \n– Mazin Qumsiyeh – Director of the Palestine Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability \n– Eyal Hareuveni – Author of “Parched: Israel’s Policy of Water Deprivation in the West Bank” \nOur moderator will be Jeff Halper\, Israeli-American anthropologist\, author\, lecturer\, and political activist; founder of Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD) and a co-founder of The One Democratic State Campaign (ODSC)(invited). \nNOTE: After you register\, you will immediately get an Approved response – BUT then look in your email for an email From: Zoom with the word “Confirmation” at the end of the subject line…there you’ll find the link and password to watch the film in advance of the Salon event. Prior to joining MEI he spent nine years working for former President Carter’s organization\, The Carter Center. He then moved to Jerusalem to run the Center’s Israel-Palestine Field Office. SUMMARY:Divest from Militarism\, Invest in Life! A conversation about war and climate change
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, January 10\, 2024\, at 11:00 am\, Online event\, click here to register \nOrganized by 350 US\, Sponsored by WAMM EMMAE Committee \nDid you know that militarism and war are devastating drivers of climate chaos? \nSprawling militaries — like the United States’ massive network of bases around the globe — are enormous sources of fossil fuel emissions. In fact\, the U.S. military alone emits more than Portugal and Denmark.1 \nPlus\, while war rages\, it reduces the international community’s cooperation to tackle the climate crisis and takes resources away from investments needed to address the impacts of climate change as countries double down on military spending. \nAs we start the year with multiple wars happening around the world and an already escalating climate crisis\, these intertwined issues are more urgent than ever. \nThat’s why 350 is hosting a conversation about militarism and the climate crisis on Wednesday\, January 10 at 11 am CST. We invite you to join us to learn why we\, as climate activists\, must fight for a world without war. \n\nDespite its huge impact\, militarism is too often left out of the conversation and organizing within our climate movement — and it’s time to change that. \nModerated by Dharna Noor\, who recently covered the urgent call by climate activists to divert military spending to fund climate aid in The Guardian\,2 this essential conversation will feature: \n\nDr. Neta Crawford\, Costs of War Project\nRamón Mejia\, About Face & Grassroots Global Justice Alliance\nAshley LaMont\, Honor the Earth\nZaki Mamdoo\, [./#NOP]350.org\n\n\n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Neoliberal Apartheid And Imperial Policing With Andy Clarno
DESCRIPTION:SATURDAY\, FEBRUARY 25\, 2023 AT 10 AM – 11:30 AM\nOnline Event\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/…/reg…/WN_Q46038RMTUiSLbI5CuwRrg\n\nAs apartheid becomes a popular framework for analyzing Palestine/Israel today\, a look at the limits of liberation in “post-apartheid” South Africa challenges us rethink the definition of what apartheid is and when it ends. Against the dominant definition of apartheid\, the radical wing of the South African liberation movement offered an alternative understanding of apartheid as a system of racial capitalism. Rethinking apartheid with this lens helps us understand extreme inequality\, racialized poverty\, and militarized policing in South Africa\, Palestine/Israel\, and the United States today. Because neoliberal apartheid regimes are highly unstable social formations\, policing becomes ever more essential to the maintenance of social order. Professor Clarno analyzes the policing in Johannesburg\, Jerusalem\, and Chicago by tracing the circulation of knowledge and technology through networks of private and state security forces that coordinate to protect the powerful by policing the racialized poor.\n\nAndy Clarno is associate professor of Sociology and Black Studies and coordinator of the Policing in Chicago Research Group at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is the author of Neoliberal Apartheid: Palestine/Israel and South Africa after 1994 (University of Chicago Press 2017).\nPlease direct questions about this event to mepn@mepn.org.\n\nThank you to our forum sponsors\, Northfielders for Justice in Palestine and Israel\n\n\n	Related
