SUMMARY:Divest from Militarism\, Invest in Life! A conversation about war and climate change
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, January 10\, 2024\, at 11:00 am\, Online event\, click here to register \nOrganized by 350 US\, Sponsored by WAMM EMMAE Committee \nDid you know that militarism and war are devastating drivers of climate chaos? \nSprawling militaries — like the United States’ massive network of bases around the globe — are enormous sources of fossil fuel emissions. In fact\, the U.S. military alone emits more than Portugal and Denmark.1 \nPlus\, while war rages\, it reduces the international community’s cooperation to tackle the climate crisis and takes resources away from investments needed to address the impacts of climate change as countries double down on military spending. \nAs we start the year with multiple wars happening around the world and an already escalating climate crisis\, these intertwined issues are more urgent than ever. \nThat’s why 350 is hosting a conversation about militarism and the climate crisis on Wednesday\, January 10 at 11 am CST. We invite you to join us to learn why we\, as climate activists\, must fight for a world without war. \n\nDespite its huge impact\, militarism is too often left out of the conversation and organizing within our climate movement — and it’s time to change that. \nModerated by Dharna Noor\, who recently covered the urgent call by climate activists to divert military spending to fund climate aid in The Guardian\,2 this essential conversation will feature: \n\nDr. Neta Crawford\, Costs of War Project\nRamón Mejia\, About Face & Grassroots Global Justice Alliance\nAshley LaMont\, Honor the Earth\nZaki Mamdoo\, [./#NOP]350.org\n\n\n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Neoliberal Apartheid And Imperial Policing With Andy Clarno
DESCRIPTION:SATURDAY\, FEBRUARY 25\, 2023 AT 10 AM – 11:30 AM\nOnline Event\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/…/reg…/WN_Q46038RMTUiSLbI5CuwRrg\n\nAs apartheid becomes a popular framework for analyzing Palestine/Israel today\, a look at the limits of liberation in “post-apartheid” South Africa challenges us rethink the definition of what apartheid is and when it ends. Against the dominant definition of apartheid\, the radical wing of the South African liberation movement offered an alternative understanding of apartheid as a system of racial capitalism. Rethinking apartheid with this lens helps us understand extreme inequality\, racialized poverty\, and militarized policing in South Africa\, Palestine/Israel\, and the United States today. Because neoliberal apartheid regimes are highly unstable social formations\, policing becomes ever more essential to the maintenance of social order. Professor Clarno analyzes the policing in Johannesburg\, Jerusalem\, and Chicago by tracing the circulation of knowledge and technology through networks of private and state security forces that coordinate to protect the powerful by policing the racialized poor.\n\nAndy Clarno is associate professor of Sociology and Black Studies and coordinator of the Policing in Chicago Research Group at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is the author of Neoliberal Apartheid: Palestine/Israel and South Africa after 1994 (University of Chicago Press 2017).\nPlease direct questions about this event to mepn@mepn.org.\n\nThank you to our forum sponsors\, Northfielders for Justice in Palestine and Israel\n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Truth Killers: The Corporate Media and the Military-Industrial Complex
DESCRIPTION:Truth Killers: The Corporate Media and the Military-Industrial Complex \nThursday\, December 1st at 7:00pm Central Time (8:00pm Eastern Time) \nOnline Event via Zoom \nThe first casualty of war\, and militarism\, is the truth. And the corporate mainstream media works diligently hand-in-glove with the US military-industrial complex to make this happen. Through its unquestioning repetition of government propaganda\, its lies of omission\, and its ratings-hungry war mongering\, the media have become an essential part of the information war so endemic to US imperialism. \nThis webinar will describe this deadly relationship and how it has evolved to the point where virtually no dissent\, no call for peace\, no real understanding of declared adversaries is allowed. From Operation Mockingbird to CIA Director William Casey’s famous quote (“We’ll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false”)\, the control of the US public’s perceptions of its government’s role in the world has been long in the making. \nNow that we are on the brink of nuclear armageddon as a result of the US/NATO pursuit of continuous war against Russia and soon\, it appears\, with China\, it has never been more important to see through the lies fed to us from the corporate media. This webinar is a step in that direction. \nBill Astore is a retired lieutenant colonel (USAF) and professor of history. He has written for TomDispatch.com\, Truthout\, History News Network (HNN)\, Alternet\, Salon\, Antiwar.com\, and Huffington Post among other sites.  He has authored or co-authored three books and numerous articles focusing on military history as well as the history of science\, technology\, and religion.  He earned a BS (with distinction) in mechanical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute\, an MA from the Johns Hopkins University (history of science and technology)\, and a D.Phil. (doctor of philosophy) from the University of Oxford (modern history). \nDavid Swanson is an author\, activist\, journalist\, and radio host. He is executive director of World BEYOND War and campaign coordinator for RootsAction.org. Swanson’s books include War Is A Lie and When the World Outlawed War. He blogs at DavidSwanson.org and WarIsACrime.org. He hosts Talk World Radio. He is a Nobel Peace Prize Nominee. \nSwanson was awarded the 2018 Peace Prize by the U.S. Peace Memorial Foundation. He was also awarded a Beacon of Peace Award by the Eisenhower Chapter of Veterans For Peace in 2011\, and the Dorothy Eldridge Peacemaker Award by New Jersey Peace Action in 2022. SUMMARY:Beyond the Two-State Solution: Standing for Justice in Palestine/Israel
DESCRIPTION:Beyond the Two-State Solution: Standing for Justice in Palestine/Israel with Jonathan Kuttab \nSaturday\, August 20\, 2022 Forum10:00am – 11:00am CT  presentation & discussion\nOnline Event\nRegister Here \nIn our concern for justice and peace\, we must start by recognizing and proclaiming the truth even if it runs counter to what is commonly accepted as “conventional wisdom.” The Two-State Solution is dead\, and peace cannot be based on military might or on the permanent subjugation and suffering of a weaker party. As Christians\, we cannot remain neutral or silent in this situation. Because God’s children on both sides are suffering\, we need to be agents of change for peace and justice. However\, we also cannot continue to speak of a “conflict” or posit a false symmetry between oppressor and the oppressed\, abuser and abused. The system of oppression\, racism\, and apartheid must be dismantled\, because it dehumanizes both oppressor and oppressed alike. An alternative to the two-state solution is proposed. \nAbout the Speaker: Jonathan Kuttab is Executive Director of Friends of Sabeel North America (FOSNA). In addition to being a co-founder of Sabeel\, Jerusalem\, Jonathan is a co-founder of the Palestinian human rights group Al-Haq and co-founder of Nonviolence International. \nA well-known international human rights attorney\, Jonathan practices in the US\, Palestine\, and Israel. He serves on the Board of Bethlehem Bible College and is President of the Board of Holy Land Trust. Jonathan was the head of the Legal Committee negotiating the Cairo Agreement of 1994 between Israel and the PLO. After graduating with his Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) from Virginia Law School\, and practicing a couple years on Wall Street\, Jonathan returned home to Palestine. Jonathan was visiting scholar at Osgoode Law School at York University in Toronto in the Fall of 2017\, and is a founding director of Just Peace Advocates Mouvement pour une Paix Juste\, a Canadian based international law human rights not-for-profit organization. Jonathan is a resident of East Jerusalem\, and is a partner of Kuttab\, Khoury\, and Hanna Law Firm in East Jerusalem. He is the author of Beyond the Two-State Solution\, suggesting that any solution be predicated on the basic existential needs of the two parties. (biography courtesy of FOSNA) \nThis event is co-sponsored Jewish Voice for Peace – Twin Cities\, Northfielders for Justice in Palestine/Israel\, Women Against Military Madness \nPlease direct questions about this event to mepn@mepn.org. \n\n\n	Related
